'tacf-x' said: "There's also the definition of supercruise to worry about...." Why?

Because it's possible for the same plane to be able to "supercruise" by one definition but not by the other, so that plane could have two different answers to the question "can it supercruise".

And why do we need to worry about it?

I was merely commenting on an earlier post about whether F-35 can supercruise and I said that it isn't just inlet and engine performance but also what exactly defines "supercruise" seeing as how I've seen 2 different definitions on this site before. If the F-35 can cruise at mach 1.2 that isn't supercruise by LockMart's apparent standard.

By "worry" I meant to say that there's more information to have to take into consideration before one can deduce that the F-35 is a supercruising fighter.

I'm still not sure why we need to label the F-35 a 'supercruising fighter'. Why is that necessary when LM does not think it is? Why is this so important? The F-35 is what it is despite any labelling fake, real, erroneous or otherwise. Because those same labels apply to other aircraft, whether or not they are relevant, seems pointless. Sure people can go on and on about this 'supercruise'. I say 'don't worry about it'. Aircraft do what they do, according to what we know, with some things we don't know for obvious reasons. Stick to what we know I reckon.

spazinbad,

Not to correct you, but JPO said "supercruise" isn't necessary, not LM.

I heard somewhere that LM could actually get in trouble if they deliver an aircraft that can "supercruise" when one was not contracted. It would be seen as adding unnecessary cost and that LM misspent the money given to them by developing abilities not contracted. A thought that just accoured to me is that maybe this is why LM's definition of supercruise is a higher standard than the general "it can cruise above Mach 1.0 on Mil power."

Give me a break.

I'm sure the pilots can 'hold it back' if necessary.

"Whoa big jet, easy there."

As long as the F-35C can do this at the end of every mission - get arrested (and not just in the simulator) then 'What? Me Worry?' Very Happy Twisted Evil Shocked Cool

That looks like it should handle pretty good around the boat.
