That's the same spacecraft that uses the super-complex RBCC engine that makes TEG shudder so much. You know, the one that instantly cools airflow down to -140 degrees Celsius and then has an overall pressure ratio of 150 and has 4 turbopumps/turbocompressors and a helium loop coolant for good measure?
However I do agree that some sort of combined cycle system is one of the few viable methods of actually making a trans-atmospheric spacecraft depicted so many times in sci-fi viable. If Reaction engines can get their idea to work, more power to them.
Anyway, I feel quite confident that whoever came up with these designs for these future systems didn't have much contact with actual engineers who design these things. I will admit these wallpapers look pretty freaking awesome though. I even have one as my desktop wallpaper at the moment.
