| Aside from the location of the refueling, I'd like to know the airspeed they were at while in contact. Look at the flaperons and leading edges. |

That configuration may be used to provide an optimum AOA at 310 CAL for both nozzle insertion and boom angle for clearance above the canopy.
(edit: When it's rough, you may end up 'exploring' the boom limits while hooked up. )
It may have something to do with FCS gains for AR also.
The F-105 LEF's were extended for AR at 310 KCAS because it was a 'pig' flight control wise at that speed clean.
I doubt that is the case here. But I've been wrong before. |
