SecDef's responds to SASC leadership:
"“I made the decision to lift probation because the F-35B is now demonstrating development, test and production maturity comparable to, and not substantively different from, the other variants” of the plane, Panetta said in the letter obtained today by Bloomberg News. “I am acutely aware of the many challenges remaining. My decision will result in absolutely no reduction in the oversight and attention given to each of the variants going forward.”"
“Some additional technical issues [with F-35B] have been identified since probation began, however these are consistent with the kind of discovery to be expected in a development program,” Panetta wrote to the Senate committee’s chairman, Democratic Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, and its top Republican, Senator John McCain of Arizona.

Well, conspicuously, Senators Levin and McCain were silent on the matter of F-35 during Secretary Panetta's testimony today. If they had any issues with the Secretary's response to them on the matter of F-35B probation they had the perfect forum in which they could have thrown spears. But, it didn't happen.
Makes one wonder why the serial leakers in the Pentagon haven't leaked the Secretary's response. |
