Neptune I think you know better, but just in case.
The 07-0744 is the tail number, not the program designation (AF-6).

Additionally it makes sense that AF-6's (and AF-7 for that matter) tail code would be changed to ED as the aircraft was officially reassigned from Eglin to Edwards when it was transfered to the SDD program immediately after DD-250.

Salute!

All the jets we saw last week in the hangar had the EG on the tails.

When we get some jets for the test wing, I expect to see yet another change in the letters.

Sorry this is so confusing; did the "other EG bird" at Edwards have it's tail code changed to ED, also?? Laughing

Thanks in advance

I'm assuming you are refering to AF-7 as the "other EG bird" at Edwards. I would assume it also was changed to ED, as it was officially reassigned to SDD to help speed flight test up. I think that all came about after the last restructuring that brought Adm. Venlet to the helm of JPO (though I could be wrong). I don't remember the exact wording, but basically due to delays in the flight test (in 2010) the LRIP 1 planes (AF-6 and AF-7) were reassigned to SDD, thus the ED is now their official tail code. I am not sure if they will be released back to Eglin (EG) after they complete their portion of flight test or if ED will hang onto the planes for future flight tests.

That is what I have read about the matter anyway. Anyone else know anymore about the fate of AF-6 and AF-7 after flight testing is complete?

Dunno, but I'd either suspect museums or target practice.

AF-6/7 are deferred LRIP F-35As. They will go on to whatever their planned function if not already filled).

As the first two production "A"s, they were planned for training at Eglin with (EG) tailcodes; but with Edwards (ED) tendency to keep one of everything the AF flies. It is doubtful they will ever leave the desert, if so on to training at Eglin. Smile

AF-6 got its tail code changed over Christmas break. AF-7 still has the EG tail code on it and will keep it for the time being. I am a mechanic on AF-3 and we keep AF-4, AF-6, and AF-7 in the same hanger with us. From what I hear is that when we are done with AF-7, it will eventually go back to Eglin.
