OK all you jargon-savvy types...listen up: When we practiced scramble launches in the sim, sometimes I'd hear the IP clear the yute for a "Gate Climb". I'm familiar with the profile itself, but I never thought to ask just why it was called a "Gate Climb". Any takers? |

| I would guess its in reference to Gate vs Buster, which mean Max AB vs Mil respectively. |

Correct. Gate referred to the restriction incorporated into the throttle between Mil Power and afterburner to make it clear to the pilot when he was in full dry power from augmented thrust, hence the word "gate" meant afterburner climb and passed a sense of urgency. Most throttles have some kind of function, either increase pressure or physical action, required to get into AB.
