Marines’ F-35 Engines Costing Way More Than Other Services’
By Mark Thompson | @MarkThompson_DC | December 29, 2011

http://battleland.blogs.time.com/2011/1 ... -services/

"...There’s been lots of grumbling over the cost of the $380 billion F-35 fighter program, and some wheels squeak louder than others. On Wednesday, the Navy awarded a $1.1 billion contract for 30 F-35 engines to Pratt & Whitney Military Engines of East Hartford, Conn....

...– The Navy is buying six engines – 20% of the total buy of 30 – and is paying $167 million. That’s 15% of the total $1.1 billion contract. Works out to $28 million per engine.

– The Air Force is buying 21 engines – 70% of the total buy of 30 – and is paying $521 million. That’s 46.3% of the total $1.1 billion purchase. That’s $25 million per powerplant.

– The Marines are buying three engines – 10% of the 30-engine deal – and are paying $387 million. That’s 34.5% of the total $1.1 billion contract. That’s $129 million per engine....

...And the Marines are buying fewer engines, which makes each one more expensive. They’re also developing theirs for short takeoffs and vertical landings, which increases the price. But by more than 300%?..."

United Technologies Corp., Pratt & Whitney Military Engines, East Hartford, Conn., is being awarded a $1,122,306,649 not-to-exceed undefinitized modification to a previously awarded advanced acquisition contract (N00019-10-C-0005). A total of $358,597,078 is being obligated at time of award. The contract includes both fixed price incentive and cost plus incentive contract line items. This undefinitized modification provides for the Lot V Low Rate Initial Production of 21 F135 Conventional Take Off and Landing (CTOL) Propulsion Systems for the Air Force; 3 Short Take-off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) Propulsion Systems for the Marine Corps; and 6 Carrier Variant (CV) Propulsion Systems for the Navy. In addition, this modification provides for production non-recurring effort, non-recurring autonomic logistics effort and recurring sustainment effort for the U.S. Services and Cooperative Partner Participants. Work will be performed in East Hartford, Conn. (67 percent); Bristol, United Kingdom (16.5 percent); and Indianapolis, Ind. (16.5 percent), and is expected to be completed in February 2014. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was not competitively procured. This contract combines purchases for the Air Force ($520,650,335; 46.3 percent); Marine Corps ($387,099,090; 34.5 percent); Navy ($166,710,445; 14.9 percent); and the Cooperative Partner Participants ($47,846,779; 4.3 percent). Just a thought. Isn't $380 billion misleading? In fact this amount concerns development of three different types (with 80% in common), not specifically one fighter jet type.
Development of each type, percentage, will cost a part of the amount of $380 billion. Development per type: more -/or less than some $126 billion.
Per type the F35 is a lot less expensive than it seems, a lot of critics seem to forget this.

Vertically Challenged: Marine F-35 Engines’ Long Lead, Much Higher Cost
By Mark Thompson | Jan 9, 2012

http://battleland.blogs.time.com/2012/0 ... gher-cost/

"You may recall a couple of weeks ago when we reported, based on our own crude analysis of a Pentagon contract announcement, that the latest batch of engines for the Marine’s F-35 fighter would cost $129 million apiece, five times the $25 million sticker on the Air Force F-35 motor. The Marines’ higher cost is because its airplane is going to be able to make short take offs and land vertically. The Marine F-35 needs to be able to do this because its amphib aircraft carriers are smaller than the Navy’s (why the U.S. military needs the world’s two largest carrier fleets is a topic for another day).

Unfortunately, that amazing vertical jump in the Marine price tag doesn’t look like an aberration. On Friday, the Pentagon announced how much it is spending to buy so-called “long-lead items” for another batch of F-35 power plants (it’s the first contract in the list). This is stuff that takes awhile to make, so it’s ordered in advance of the actual engine contract:

– Air Force: $3.1 million per engine

– Navy: $5.3 million per engine

– Marines: $14.1 million per engine

Mind you: this is not the cost per airplane, nor the cost per engine. It is only the cost per engine of these ordered-in-advance items. Good to know that when it comes time to land in the poorhouse, we’ll be able to do so vertically."

"Stupid is as Stupid does"; MT has taken a false position and trying to support it, Ha!

It would be interesting to see the difference in cost from the "navalized F-135" to the VL parts for the "Bee". Shocked I hope I'm not wrong in assuming that they start at the base engine and add the VL parts? Question I think I have seen about $3mil difference between the A & C engines for "navalizing"? Smile

Interesting if the -B gets the "navalization treatments" to its engine and lift fan system.

maus92 why would not the F-35B engine and LiftFan system be suitably protected as the F-35C is protected from marine environment?
