Roof blows off of revetments at Nellis
9/9/2011 - Nellis AFB, Nev.

A canopy which provides protection from the elements for aircraft maintenance and support personnel on the east side of the Nellis Air Force Base collapsed when a microburst, a sudden, violent downdraft of air over a small area; hit the base at approximately 5 p.m. Sept. 8.

Eleven F-16s and two A-10s. Looks like the short walls held up to prevent extensive damage and I would think all aircraft will fly again.

Here's what we know:

F-16s:
88-0437
88-0466
89-2048
One marked 57 OG - serial to be determined

A-10's:
82-0267

two other HL 4FS F-16s besides 88-0437 and 88-0466/466FS parked in the revets were 88-0436 and 88-0486
57 OG's serial is 92-3882
also involved besides 89-2048 was 91-0470 and 91-0478
it is possible OT vipers were also involved
out flying at the time of the incident were WA's 88-0499, 90-0707, 90-0728, 90-0739, 90-0750, 91-0362/57 WG, 91-0404, 91-0475
this leaves the possibility of the other 3 among these if they were WA and not OT:
90-0721 (last seen in June), 90-0726 (last seen in March), 90-0729 (last seen in August), 90-0746 (last seen in August), 90-0747 (last seen in June), 90-0839 (last seen in August), 91-0467 (seen outside of fuel barn since, so doubtful), 91-0473 (last seen in August), and 93-0553/16WPS (last seen in July).
this would leave me to believe 3 out of the 4 seen in August (729, 746, 839, 473) may have been involved?

no such serialled A-10 exists. 6 FTs were also out flying at the time, leaving FT 82-0657 and 80-0180/476FS not out at the time.

there was also a fuel truck in one of the spaces.

if this had happened an hour earlier or an hour later, there would have been 14 more aircraft and everyone involved in readying them to launch (with live munitions), or recovering them involved also. very lucky timing!

Also ... Safety board seeks information: The Safety Investigation Board is asking anyone with information, pictures or video of the sunshades over the revetment area before or during the collapse on Sept. 8, 2011, to contact the board. The safety board is interested in preventing future collapse and will offer confidentiality to people who submit visual materials or information about items that may have been out of place, broken or loose. If confidentiality is offered, information provided cannot be used against people who submitted the materials in future administrative or punitive actions. If people prefer, they can send materials and information to the board anonymously through the 99th Air Base Wing safety office, which can be reached at 702-652-7602. The Safety Investigation Board can be reached 702-652-8895 or 301-602-3028 or Kyle.Singer@nellis.af.mil.
