I just got done with my first "swing" at applying to a ANG F-16 unit. Made the interview, but didnt get the slot. Totally different experience from what I dealt with in ROTC. ANG units want to know you as a person whereas ROTC was all about numbers and scores.
This was an awesome experience. Although I only applied to one unit, I feel like I can give some advice to anyone wanting to know more about this process. Personally I think going after an UPT slot with an ANG unit is the best way to get a "insert a/c here" slot. You can't slack off at UPT, but if you make the grade you KNOW what you will be flying when you are done. Can't beat that!
Anyways hit me up if you wanna know more from my point of view. |

contraildash,
I am trying to get a UPT slot at my Guard unit(F-16CJs) and from what I know you cannot slack off. All the young guys that are at my unit tell me that you have to finish in the fighter track group. If you don't your flight CC(or guy in charge of the board) will ask for an honest opinion of your performance at UPT(wanting to know if you have what it takes to be a fighter pilot) and if you don't... your toaste(you go to a heavy unit). This has happened to 3 out of 6 guys that we have sent more recently. They went to a C-130 and C-17 base. Anyway... thats how it is at our unit... If anyone has any advice for me let me know... I dont know everything there is to know about getting a guard slot and want to... Fill me in... Here is my situation...
I went to Embry Riddle for about 2 yrs, couldnt afford it so I came home and joined the South Carolina Air Guard(near my home) as an Intelligence Analyst. We work day in and out with the pilots doing mostly mission planning for SEAD/DEAD tasking. Went to Basic (Distinguished Grad, Top 3% out of 850 airman), Went to USAF Intel School(Honor Grad/%90), Took the AFOQT- Pilot-95, Took the BAT-PCSM 96. I will be interviewing for the 1st time coming up... any advice. My grades in college arent great in the past but now I am on the Deans list. Any help is appreciated....
Later
