Am reading a book on the history of the air force and in it mentions that during the 1950's there were about 1500 dedicated interceptors stationed around the country to protect us from the hordes of Russian bombers that were going to attack us one day. How many dedicated fighter interceptor squadrons are there in use today????

Eh...we only have a relative handful of alert sites. The number is maximum 100 interceptors (rough estimate), and only a few of these are on alert at any one point in time.
