I'd like to know various recording systems (or various videos cameras) in cockpit.

q1. A lot of time we see HUD videos I belive that is built in in all fighters and u have to turn its recording ON.

q2. Is there any camera which faces towards PILOT. see below link OR on other hand this kind of camera is always installed when u want to make a documentary.

q3. what is ACMI and AVTR (what do they represent physically like a camera of VCR etc)

q4. Any additional new cameras installed In block 40s or 50s (to cover some other angle Smile )

a1: Yes

a2: The videos looking back at the driver come from lipstick cams mounted on the glareshields that are tied into the jets video recording system. The lipstick cams are not permanently mounted AFAIK. The still you posted is the occupant with a hand-held camera.

a3: ACMI = Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation. A missile-shaped pod mounted on one of the missile stations (usually a wingtip). Transmits aircraft telemetry during flight maneuvers to a ground station for real-time tracking and later debrief. The equivalent of the US Navy's TACTS.

AVTR = Aircraft Video Tape Recorder. Called the CTVS now. It used to be a 3/4" video tape cassette that went into a recorder accessed from one of the underside doors. The new systems probably use a different media.

a4: None to my knowledge.

If the aircraft contains a Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) there is a camera mounted on the helmet that looks where the pilot is looking.

Now most jets have been upgraded to DVR's instead of the analog tapes. They make debriefing a lot easier and are very timesaving. They record three or four channels depending on the block and upgrades, and if flying with three channels, pilots have to choose between the HUD or JHMCS in addition to the MFD's. Most pilots record the HUD to make debriefing bearable and also because you miss out some information if you record the JHMCS.
