Looking for your thoughts on the Lightning.
Fuel tanks on the top of the wings... engines mounted one above the other.
Articles I read say it had extremely fast acceleration, high ceiling 50000'. First fighter able to supercruise, Mach 2 speed. Fastest English designed fighter ever!!
Any former pilots out there who flew the Lightning? |

| It's a perfect example of British engineering witchcraft squeezing every last drop of performance from available technology. |

The missiles were top-mounted too. It had prolly one of the most dramatic vertical ascents of any jet. Even the Eagle. And with that much wing sweep, the landing speeds had to be, shall we say...."brisk". |

| Any pictures with top-mounted missiles. I thought that was only a French Jaguar technique. |

Most of the info I found said the bags were the most common thing mounted over the wing. Even with Google, I couldn't readily find any pix of top-mounted missiles. I did come across the image below of a Kuwaiti jet with top-mounted rocket pods, so one could assume you could mount missiles there also. That may have been unique to the Saudi and Kuwaiti jets.
But I think you're right about the Jag and it's over-wing missiles. You saw it more on them than on the Lightning. |
