PERKASIE, Pennsylvania - Sikorsky Aerospace Services today announced that the U.S. State Department has accepted the first two modernized S-61TM aircraft that will support missions for the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan. Sikorsky Aerospace Services (SAS) is the aftermarket division of Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
The U.S. State Department has entered into a five-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) purchase agreement for up to 110 modernized S-61 aircraft for passenger and cargo transport missions in support of its worldwide operations. The accepted aircraft will now undergo completion by SAS with specialized mission equipment to meet U.S. State Department requirements before being deployed this fall.
“The U.S. State Department’s acceptance of these first two modernized S-61 aircraft marks a major milestone in the launch of the S-61TTM modernization program. The S-61T helicopter will meet the needs of customers worldwide, and we are excited about how much interest this aircraft has generated,” said David Adler, President of Sikorsky Aerospace Services. “As the State Department pursues worldwide aviation missions, we remain fully committed to supporting their helicopter requirements.”
The modernized S-61T helicopter will incorporate key upgrades that include composite main rotor blades (CMRB), modular wiring harness, and an optional state-of-the-art glass cockpit – all of which dramatically improve aircraft supportability. The S-61T helicopter modernization will also add lift capability as well as enhance speed. Additional features will be incorporated to reduce pilot fatigue and reduced maintenance requirements for increased safety.
Sikorsky Aerospace Services, a Sikorsky company, provides comprehensive support to rotary and fixed wing operators around the world. It offers its military and commercial customers a full portfolio of support services, including material distribution, maintenance, overhaul & repair, aircraft modifications and life-cycle support.
Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., based in Stratford, Conn., is a world leader in helicopter design, manufacture and service. United Technologies Corp., based in Hartford, Conn., provides a broad range of high technology products and support services to the aerospace and building systems industries worldwide.
I thought this was interesting news and am curious if the US government is putting old US Navy SH-3 back in the air again via an S-61T upgrade. |

Im busy getting ready to PCS to Illesheim.
The rest of the site is primarily made up of Falcon 4.0 fanboys and Osprey/Super Hornet haters. Not a lot of people with any experience in Rotory Wing Aviation. |

| Im on Air Warriors a lot. Its a Navy/Marine Aviation Forum but we've got members from all services. Lot of SeaHawk/Osprey/53 info on that site since the majority of Navy Aviators are Rotary Wing pilots. Thing I like about it is if you wear wings at work the put them under your username on the site. Kinda helps maintain the professional tone of the site and keeps down the fanboy stupidity. |

| That's nice. I really wish Army AKO had an aviation forum. If all the units participated in it there would be a lot of good flying and maintenance experience shared through out the entire Army Aviation community. You pilots are lucky in that you have highly experienced CW3s, CW4s, and CW5s that have been flying for a decade or more. The Army still has pilots that have been flying longer than I've been alive. That's a very strong base of mentorship. That's experience you'll never ever find in the maintenance side of the house. It is highly unusual to see troops turning wrenches more that 8 to 10 years. Career progression dictates that you grow dumb on aircraft maintenance and smart on politics and a$$ kissing. I hope I see the day tech sergeants make a come back in the Army. It would save money and make flying safer. |

Maybe we are called "Copterheads' being the name rotor has so many meanings.
I have always loved Helicopters and I got to see lots of failed VTOL's in my lifetime.
The development of the V-22 Osprey was too slow. Great copter that flies fast like a plane.
It helped us win the war in Iraq, if you can call Iraq a win or victory.
Many people have come to hate helicopters. Pilots flying them over my house do not realize the noise or vibrations that it makes, is causing the rafters of my wooden roof to shake!
Besides being noisy, helicopters are slow. The latest I heard was several proposals during the Bush Admin.
The USAF wants a four rotor V-22 called the V-44. I do not know if it got canceled or went black.
The DoD also ordered a C-130 converted into a rotor wing craft.
I have little info on these. Many projects have been canceled for budget cuts.
The US Navy canceled the Comanche Stealth Helicopter in 2004, but they went ahead with a new version of a Blackhawk, that was so secret that we didnt find out about it until May 3rd when it was used to kill Usama Bin Laden. |

In March/April 2011, the Danish military announced that they were preparing their old Sikorsky S-61 [1] SAR helicopters for sale. No big deal ... the Danes had finally arrived at a reasonable point in the drawn-out attempt to field reliable EH-101 SAR helicopters.
