How good is Rafale's new AESA compared to Block 60 and Super Hornet's? in terms of range and tracking speed
Its the first western AESA radar outside the US .

According to the UAE, the APG-80 has more range, and better interleaving of modes/more modes. It would fare even worse against the APG-79.

It might not be as good as the US AESA radars, but I'm sure it's still state-of-the-art.

I would concur with disco. Cheers to France on this achievement. And bon chance to Rafale.

Putting aside the limited size of the radar (an obvious flaw that they're stuck with) just how cutting edge is this radar? As far as I was aware it's a new(ish) AESA front end mated onto a slightly modified but old backend.

I'm not so sure it is state of the art (actually i'm thoroughly convinced on that part) but yes it's a nice achievement for the French.

The backend is certainly not the very newest, but probably not more dated than that of an AN/APG-63(v3) or AN/APG-77 which were designed around the same time.

Can anyone take this serious? five years based on what?

Thales is “five years ahead of anybody in Europe or the U.S.” in active arrays for airborne radars.

There are indeed some people who take this serious, but it should be classified as marketing talk and nothing else.

Fun Fact: 99.999% of all who argue over subject matter such as this, will never actually operate either radar.
