A few years ago,I was on the cliffs of Moher, it was a s### day with nothing but clouds, suddenly two C-17's (flying from Shannon) burst down through the cloud top to no more than 100 feet above us,I was left dumbstruck by the massive back blast.I was wondering do they fly that low because they can, to scare the farmers who haven't even heard of a C-17 or to have some fun on the 5-7 hour flight?

Sounds like the RAF was doing a two-ship DDS (Direct Delivery Sortie). Most likely a training mission. They usually plan their low level routes in desolate areas to keep down the noise complaints and from scaring the local populace.
It’s something we used to do on a regular basis in the C-17 world. The multi-ship low level training Direct Delivery Sortie requirements have mostly been replaced by multi-ship aerial delivery training sorties. |

It wasn't the RAF because:
I was able to make out the USAF insignia as well as a substantial American flag (sorry should have mentioned that)
The cliffs of Moher is on the west coast Britain is on the east coast.
It would make sense if it was the USAF as they flew west from Shannon to the US.

| I haven't flown any C-17 missions of that nature in that region but years ago we'd fly low-level routes thru Scotland in C-141's and do personell airdrops. Maybe some similar training taking place. With the exception of the flag on the tail, all C-17 users (except Qatar) are painted very similar. Of course the national emblems are different but usually subdued enough to be nearly invisible. For you to see the flag must have been quite a thrill if you like to be up close and personal with large aircraft (LOL). |

Yeah it was,(best bit was a skirt being blown up by the back blast!!! )
Coincidently,Shannon was used extensively by the CIA (extrodinary rendition) and US Army spec ops for the handling of important people or sometimes just troop transport for 2-3 years.
Anyways they caught hell from the hippies. All 10 protestors!(LOL)
Its pretty cool you get to fly that beast!
