F-22 Upgrade Taking Too Much Time, Money
BY DAVE MAJUMDAR | PUBLISHED: 19 MAY 2011 18:47

The latest hardware and software upgrade for the U.S. Air Force's F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jet is over budget and behind schedule, top Defense Department officials told Congress on May 19.

"The Increment 3.2 that we're currently working on for the F-22 for our war-fighting customer is taking too long to implement," Air Force procurement chief David Van Buren told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee. "We are working with the company [Lockheed Martin] to try to speed that up and make it more affordable."

Among other improvements, the upgrade will allow the F-22 to carry the AIM-9X infrared-guided air-to-air missile and the AIM-120D medium-range air-to-air missile, and to attack eight ground targets with eight 250-pound Small Diameter Bombs.

This is what happens when you only buy 187 airframes. Plus, I doubt Lockheed has put their best people on the project. No wonder it's FUBAR.

But saying it's all because you only bought 187 is a terrible excuse because many many other nations have a fighter force of far less than 187 yet they still manage to get upgraded. Seems straight forward that appalling program managment is the more likely answer as to why the most powerful nation on earth cannot cope with upgrading its aircraft.

Every penny becomes fuss these days, especially for the F22 and F35 program

Indeed it does, but if you can't manage to finance the operation of your premier air defence asset you have to wonder if you should be operating it at all, infact you have to wonder if you should be operating any aircraft at all it you make such a hash up of your premier fighter aircraft.

I never used to think otherwise but now i'm fairly certain the Chinese will have the worlds number one airforce within the next few decades and it's all because the American military handles its programs with such a high degree of incompetence.

Incompetence is not the problem. Politics is. They're all so power hungry and keeping their seats in Congress that our national defense suffers.

Well all those other nations air forces don't have another ~3800 a/c in their air force to also keep upgraded and running nice as well as a navy that has in excess of 2000 a/c and a Marine Corps with more a/c then all but maybe 3 or 4 nations air forces on the planet which must also be maintained. I think it's a combination of what you say and the shear numbers of a/c the US must keep upgraded. With this many a/c every penny literally adds up to millions and we simply don't have the extra cash these days.

Yea you're right Shep. America is so incompetent that it managed to build the worlds most sophisticated, advanced and numerically superior air force to every single nation on the planet. Imagine what we could had done had we been as competent as the UK and had a nice ~300 fighter plane air force Rolling Eyes Get over it Shep. It's not our fault the UK is basically a 3rd world air force as far as number go. If I were you I'd be hoping what you predict does not happen. By that time the UK wont even have an air force and who's gonna save you when those nasty Chinese come calling on yall??

We'll save ourselves, thank you.

Much like we'll have to wind up saving the French/N.A.T.O., when our fearless leader went on vacation... and put them at the wheel, to steer the ship.

C'mon, you could see that one coming down I-91, on it's way toward Pratt's Facility here in CT!!!*

SmileSmileSmile

*I can hear it now, "You're awful brash, given you're a noob here..."

Yeah well, I may not work in the business like alot of you, "experts"... but I'm entitled to my own opinion, and I've been studying this stuff longer than many of you "ivory tower" folk, have been alive...
