Given what we know from recent events concerning the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, is there any reason we should continue aid to Pakistan? I've heard we have given them $10 billion over the years. How much has that aid money paid off? Is there any reason, besides the fact that they have nukes, to continue giving it to them?

IMHO,they know what to do to receive money,so if they really engage like the US want them to,they will receive no more money coz the source will dry(legitimate reason given they have no oil,"de bonne guerre" like french say) the US are also seeking their interests, thats why you did it alone last week.
now there is no reason to give further $$,the game is over, build a security fence between Astan/Pstan and leave

Problem is, no one really knows what went on, and we are never likely to find out. Pakistan needs US military aid and the US needs Pakistan to allow the US to prosecute the "Long War".
Pakistan turns a blind eye to Drone strikes along it`s border, although there have been civilian casualties so the Pak Gov is getting twitchy about the strikes, which average 2 a week. There are also NATO logistical routes using Pakistan territory into Afghanistan. Pakistan also has NUKES. The US definitely wants to keep an eye on those, including where they are pointed. the last thing we ned is for Pakistan to go "extremist", so like it or not, the US will remain in bed with Pakistan as a hedge.

I saw an interview with an ex ISI (Pakistan intel) officer about a week ago, who stated that there was an agreement made at high level that aloowed the US to ACT on Intel on Bin Laden if they had it, to save time and stop him escaping, which would happen if the Pakistan Mil and the US mil paused to haggle about who was going to do what. the deal was made between Bush and Musharaff in 2003.
Whether that high level deal still held up until last week is anybodys guess.

I think the Obama government has made an error in publicly accusing Pakistan of aiding Bin Laden, they should have kept it to the back channels and sorted it out, THEN gone public if necessary.

I am not a US citizen but I as an Australian do hope the USA does continue to support Pakistan - the USA has a moral obligation to do so because of its past actions - many of the problems Pakistan now has have been brought about by the USA. It was the CIA who actively went into Pakistan and solicited the support of Pakistans intelligence services and Armed forces to recruit Taliban fighters and Muslim extremists and arm them with AK47's and shoulder launched rockets etc. - usually SAM's bought on the World black market to hide USA involvement from the rest of the world. Just as the CIA also armed the Warlords of Afghanistan at the same time to fight the USSR for there own strategic reasons. Cold War paranoia. All of this done by the USA mainly to give the USSR a bloody nose like the one the USA had got in Vietnam a few years before. The USA was happy up until then to let the USSR support Afghanistan financially etc. from 1920 onwards. The moment the USSR sent some troops in to support the then Socialist Government of Afghanistan the USA as usual felt obliged to take an interest in an area they did not understand. The same as Vietnam - a Civil War.

I wonder what would happen if we cut off ALL aid for about 10 years. Hopefully that would be enough to pay off some debt.

I personally think we cut off aid to Pakistan. The ISI has ties to the taliban. Why should we pay these backwards thinking people who show no loyalty or appreciattion for what we give them. My personal opinion is that Pakistan is taking aid from the US and allowing the taliban to operate in Pakistan.

I agree. Our relationship with Pakistan has bore little fruit. Pakistan got money, military hardware and training. What did the US get?

nevertheless,Santa Obama loves pakistan Laughing
pay your taxes please, the aid will increase to 3 Billion $
Quote:
Pakistan ranks third at $2,965 million, 80 per cent of which is for activities supported by the Economic Support Fund (ESF) and the Pakistan Counter-insurgency Capability Fund-OCO (PCCF).
If funding from the US defence budget was included, Pakistan would rank second for both FY2010 and 2012.
