Hmmm, Doesn't need a gun eh? Ask some old F-4 guys that didn't need a gun either. Until you can find a new weapon with an effective range from the tip if the nose to the minimum range of the AIM-9, the gun is all you've got. Plus I'm not sure they are pointing nose down to do much straffing but that works too.
Any way, the gun system has to come out every 18 months regardless of rounds fired. If you want to find out how guns systems inspections affect things talk to the A-10 guys. I don't think they ever see a calendar inspection on the GAU-8.
