First off, apologies to johnwill  I didn't realize he was an actual aircraft designer and not a 14 yo kid with a copy of Jane's and a box set of "Wings."
I've read that the USAF has been relying on loner A-6s from the Navy since it retired the Sparkvark. So why doesn't it purchase a few EA-18Gs for the EW roll? Seems that all the services are dependent on the pukes for this capability now, even the Army. When I was in Iraq in 2006, there was actually a Navy EWO NCO attached to the battalion (1-9 INF) to help with our IED jammers. I can't remember what the model was called, but it wasn't the Duke system that most Army units were using. In any case, I can probably only make girls now.
Maybe the USAF is waiting for something better. Is the F-35 going to have jamming built in?

The USAF does not want to deal with the issue of maint and parts tracking for only a few Growlers.
On the JSF front, it has space in the wing root RwR bays to add active jammers if the client (USAF, USN, etc) ever want it. It is also pre-wired for the NGJ (Next Generation Jammer).
Part of the JSF block upgrade plans include a feature called "Cooperative EW". This most likely will entail nearby F-35s aiding in each other's EW efforts to confuse the target as to the true location of the emmiter. |

That makes since. I guess that's why they dropped the EF-111 as well. |

Sgt: My stock about someone always shoots up when they apologize. It shows humility and openness. I know I put my foot in my mouth at least once every other hour. Johnwill is an honest-to-goodness aeronautical engineer and more than that he is pretty good at explaining things to lay folk like me. It does remind me to afford most people a certain amount of respect, even if you don't know them. You never who you might be talking to.
