Another setback for the RAFALE?

By contrast, the Rafale is too demanding for many 3rd world nations to handle operationally. If I was in charge at Dassault, I'd look into recapturing some of the market with a simple, light weight, low observable fighter for customers who don't want to pay for all the F-35's bells and whistles.

Are you suggesting they start over completely or just chop some of the fancy stuff off the standard Rafale?

Here's the problem with MICA, its a bit of an inbetweener. At 112kg, its a lot heavier than other western IR missiles which average 85-90kg. That might limit its usage in some aircraft. On the other hand the RF version is smaller than your typical BVR missile and is a bit lacking on the range.

for a range between 60/80km,50G load, not bad for 3/4 gen fighters,I would say one of the best in the market

That's excellent for an IR missile, but considerably shorter in range to the AMRAAM, R77, etc.... Once the Rafale has the Meteor, then it'll have a proper long range RF missile.

R77 is advertised by ROSOBORONEXPORT as:

Quote:
Max launch range, km:

against fighter-type targets 50km
against bomber-type targets 80km

IMHO overestimated

A mixed Meteor + MICA IR + possibly now a wing-tip ASRAAM load-out is definitely eye-catching and unique for any platform generation.

Apparently the Rafale was among the first aircraft to fire shots, in anger, against loyalists forces in Libya. None have been shot down as of yet. The US is minimizing its role after the initial attacks, which may mean the MVP of this operation could be the French Rafale. That might help it sell on the export market. The French Navy is moving their carrier near the Gulf of Sidra. Maybe this would allow the navalized variant (Rafale M?) some good press.

The SH is combat proven ,the Rafale not so this is a good opportunity to attract attention.
