Lots of interesting numbers.

How much would it have cost to cancel and go all F-35?

And what would have replaced Tornado ADV and Jaguar halfway on time.

Oh either SH or updated (think golden eagle) F-15. Both offer more bang for less buck today. But better yet why did they have to retire the Tornado ADV and Jaguar early (hint tiffie).

Well, although they danced around too long on providing full capability and the upgrades the upgrades, the basic Typhoon is probably a better plane than the F-15 (with 20 years newer technology it damn well better be). Question is whether it's enough better to justify the cost differential. Tornado ADV was a political plane (they should have bought F-14s or -15s for that role) and appears to have been somewhat of a disappointment and its role can definitely be filled by Typhoon. Jaguar had some engine issues, but also didn't have as strong a constituency on the halls of power as Tornado so it went on the chopping block at budget time. This happens. Frankly, and I know it's outside the scope of this topic, but a strong similar case can be made that the UK should have retained the Harriers over the Tornado.

BTW, I suspect that the authors of the referenced article may be a wee bit predisposed against Typhoon.
