What requirements?
Early lots are more likely to be SLEP'd than retired. Operating costs of 60-100 jets for 10 years is not nickels and dimes, either. Plus you have to actually buy them!
SLEP and upgrade is still going to be the cheaper option. |

SLEP and upgrade would actually end up being more expensive to operate a 2030-equivalent, block 35+-requirement-capable platform.
The initial lots were not intended to be game-changers in the 2030s. Also, the future unfunded AF budgets will be found more in the operational and maintenance budgets. Those will be cut by default due to necessity to 'back-end' procurements under the currently flawed mind-set. (i.e., simply reduce front-end $200m F-35A procurements and pick them up in the back-end when they are cheaper at 80 units per year.). This still officially projected thinking is a total insult to our allies, national defense, as well as to the taxpayer. It's an example of stay-the-course incompetence, inability and failed leadership. I'm sorry. |

How is that?
Block 35+ implies they are going to be upgraded anyway. IRST and cheek arrays and whatever doodads you want to jam in there are going to cost money, and while you're going to have to pay more to upgrade the old Block F-22's it's still not going to touch the cost of a new airplane. Even if you throw in a SLEP that's not likely to change. |

| To upgrade the initial lots to a hypothetical new-build block 35+ standard, sufficient to be a modern 2030 game-changer, would also likely incur some airframe enhancements as well as the significant hardware and software upgrades. |

What kind of airframe enhancements would apply to Block 20's but not Block 30's?
Any kind of crazy upgrade is going to be crazy for both the early blocks and the late ones. They aren't that radically different. |
