According to multiple reports I've seen, AF has acknowledged that the only way to to talk to tactical forces on the ground is through in the clear voice.
I find it hard to believe the F-22 doesn't have VHF/FM SINCGARS or UHF/AM Have Quick capability. |

It's also hard to believe the F-22 can't use AIM-9X in high off-boresight mode (in fact, as of today I'm not sure it can use AIM-9X at all) but that's the reality. As the Raptor had to fight its way each year to survive, there were always priorities as to what could get on the aircraft given what money it was allowed to have. Given the role USAF has for the F-22, it's possible that they felt there were other things they wanted on there first. With its amazing avionics system, the F-22 would be a superb "spot" signals gathering platform for use in Iraq and Afghanistan, yet it was never used as such, possibly because it couldn't communicate the intel it could gather in a timely manner to those directly affected.
Maybe someone else can give us more definitive info. But it's stuff like this that people like Maddow blow all out of proportion to fit their preconceived notions. |

What is true, though, is that an F-22 can only engage in two way secure communication with another F-22. For example, should an F-22 be needed to support troops on the ground, the technique will be to use regular in the clear voice. Work is underway to rectify the situation, but in the medium term this will only expand secure two-way to the B-2 and F-35.
Actually this isn't true. The F-22 can talk securely with anyone. The only thing that is Raptor to Raptor only is IFDL, the data link.
Thank you for being more precise than I was. You are, of course, correct. Still not being able to join the data network with F-16s, F-15s, B-1s, AWACS USN assets, etc. does raise an eyebrow and is one of the things used against the F-22 by organizations like MSNBC (even if they have no idea of what they're talking about). It bothers me that the plane isn't defended more by those in power, but then I guess you can't expect them to stick up more for something they have said "...we don't need". Too many embarrasing questions then get asked. That's how Generals involuntarily become Generals (Ret.). |

| To be even more precise, it's the ability to communicate stealthily, not securely, that's at issue here. Once the F-22 gets MADL, it will be able to communicate stealthily with F-35s and B-2s. It can communicate securely with other aircraft using voice comms, and it can share data using BACN. |

i guess it can communicate in a secure way (don't mean stealthy but with cripted voice) with every a/c, but cannot send images and data (i mean to pass target's coords, informations or so).
Obviously the pilots can dictate this data on their microphone. |

| I wonder how much deliberate disinformation is circulated about the Raptor to conceal it's true capabilities? |

| The F-22 can pass all types of data to the rest of the network using a BACN aircraft. It's not just for data. |

You're saying that our superfighter needs a Global Express to help them out? |

No, but the F-2 cannot pass data (targeting info, ESM intercepted info, etc) to anyone except fellow F-22s without a BACN equipped aircraft. That is why they are getting upgraded with MADL.
For example, if a F-22 detects other aircraft on it's radar, it cannot pass that info back to an AWACS. |

Fortunately, the F-22 still contains some secrets that the USAF and LM isn't talking about. I'm personally thankful of that. |

Will MADL allow it to pass info securely to something besides the B-2 or F-35, which is what they usually talk about for F-22 plans for the future? |

Who'll gone have MADL beside F-22, F-35 and B-2? |

| Well, the F-22 could pass to an AWACS (via MADL) and the AWACS could go from there or a F-22 could pass to a F-35 (via MADL) and the F-35 could pass it along via satellite (Blk4/5 IIRC) |

No problem! With the plethora of RQ-4's up there, the problem is solved.
Oh, wait... the RQ-4 doesn't have BACN yet. |
