Just somethin' I thought was interesting on airliners.net. I'm no Sukoi fanboy but this says alot about the gear on the Flanker (and several other Russian jets also).

| Wow, did it just land on that road? (with air brake still up??) Anyhow, there is definitely more to this pic, given all the landing gear and other stuff?? Weird. |

Yup, tow job.
Then again, Russian aircraft are widely known for their ability to function in some pretty rough conditions. Landing gear that has pseudofenders for the nose gear, grills or doors for the intakes, and beefy struts equals impressive durability. Bearing in mind that most of their customers aren't paying out much to have bargain air assets that can be used even in third world countries- they are worth it. Russian bases themselves look like they are abandoned or boneyards, they sure aren't pretty like ours. Then again, during wartime they function just fine for what they are needed for. I highly doubt any Russian airbases ever needed to do FOD checks- or even know what one is, for that matter...
"FOD check? You mean food check, Tovarisch? Ok, don't try borscht in base cafeteria, is no good, da? Now we fly, watch out for yak grazing near runway."
I still love their aircraft though- Built Russkie Tough. |

SU-27IB or SU-27KUB or SU-32 or SU-34. Take your pick. I don't even think the Russians know.
I think ‘mad’ was referring to the single nose wheel of the first SU-27IB prototype although I think this is just a standard 27 distorted by an interesting telephoto angle. None of the SU-32/34 series have that type of airbrake and there are other differences as well.
I saw a SU-32 get thrown around the sky a few years back. An incredible sight, but the aircraft reminded me of a more maneuverable F-111 than an F-15E. |

Su-34 has dualie-tires in the front.
The original Su-27IB prototype (1990?) had a single tire in front like the baseline Su-27. The later developments used dualies. |
