| Looking at photos on the internet production F-22's have been rolled-out in all-over brown primer. Then ship 4112 was all-over brown with some green panels, and now ship 4137 is in all-over green primer. What is the reason for the change? |

| I'm not sure but I think those are layers. Might be something related to the stealth coatings??? Idk, maybe some areas need more primer/layers of paint than others. |

More likely relates to which panels are bare composites, and which are coated with primer? |

sounds good to me TEG. I would assume that any metal parts would require primer immediately while composites are just brown until the whole acft is primered prior to full paint and coatings. F-35 pics show the same thing. Its nice to have a decent question lately. |

Sorted ...
The F-22 will be sporting a new green color during test flights. The change from the familiar brown is an upgrade in the primer used for exterior paint. The green primer does not contain the hazardous chromium compounds found in traditional aircraft primers. Further it offers greater corrosion protection with reduced costs compared to the brown. |

| LOL I think I saw some pics of those... very rare though. Was that actually for real? I thought they'd been photoshopped. |

| They were for real. Wasn't the entire jet but both the company and AF pilot were not happy about it. |

According to the recent GAO report the "upgrade" primer was not thoroughly tested and offered worse corrosion protection than the traditional hexavalent chrome primers. As a footnote, when that report talks about non-chrome, they actually mean non-hexavalent - there are some heavily marketed trivalent chrome primers on the market.
