Title was a shameless attempt to mask the fact this is not really an F-35 related thread, I don't read other forums that much.

So it looks like things could escalate with north and south over the coming weeks/months...

North Korea is protected by 350-odd sa-2's, sa-3's and sa-5's and thousands of manpads. 390 fighters, 30 of them Mig-29's, the rest mig-21's (mainly)...some bisons, mig-23's and mig-17's.

South Korea has similar SAM numbers, possibly with patriots in the mix. 470 fighters including their 40 shiney F-15k's, lots of f-5's and f-16's and some f-4's.

Wonder how this will play out.

It won't play out as the west and SK lacks the balls to do anything about NK and besides China and Russia would step in to help them out (don't believe it when they claim to be for peace, if it kicked off they'd show thier true colours).

F-35 would be a very useful asset though if it did hit the fan, its DAS makes it probably better suited and more useful than any other fighter out there, even more than the SK Eagles which would be going deep strike.

Oh, I don't know. I rather think they're wishing they had a squadron of B-2's loaded up with 300 kiloton hydrogen bombs. That would make pretty short work of a NK offensive.

Dont forget U.S. is good friends with SK so if there was a war they would us B-2 i dout they would us nukes but with the power of both U.S. and SK working together is more then enough to take down NK.

I imagine there are a bunch of Ohio class captains getting targeting orders right about now too, just in case. Things are probably getting hectic on Guam as well. Lots of things happening right now, I'm sure.

Do not worry about MANPADS or SA-2s, they can be defeated easily. SA-3s and SA-5s, unknown. Lets just hope that South Korea can at least defend itself right now. F-35s would be of some help. Tehn again, theres already many US Military Posts/Bases/Camps in SK, they can interfere since they are there. I guess its time to prepare for WWIII and time for the F-22s and F-35s to go help out an ally. Japan isn't too far away with F-15Js though but agin, need to see what will happen. MIM-104 Patriots can get some of the job done but to rely too much on them, can be bad.

The F-35 is pretty overkill for the Glorious Peoples Army Air Force of DPRK!!!

Those systems are old enough where ROK doesn't really need stealth- competent ECM will do just fine.

History with these kind of incidents tells us that it is most likely going to be an isolated incident. However, it's a delicate situation and things can quickly escalate.

stereospace, are you out of your mind? Nobody is wishing hydrogen bombs on anyone.

The Ohio and 3 of her sisters sisters are now configured as SSGNs with over 200 cruise missiles onboard.

I've always wondered why they (North Korea) went by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea when they are neither a republic or a democracy.

If it came down to Korean War II, we might not hear much about F-35s. Instead we'd hear about how everything of military worth in North Korea started spontaneously combusting.

Please folks... an F-35 'now' discussion is irrelevant to begin with, because it's 6-7 yrs from being a mature operational jet in the first place! Not even debatable.

What SK could do now, for the cost of about 10 LRIP F-35As (about $2bn) and not look weak in the next 48 hrs (only begging more cheap shots at will, with no reasonable strategic response), would possibly be to order 100 HIMARS MLRS launch vehicles with a mix of 60km guided M30/M31 munitions.

While diplomatic efforts were under way to condemn the attack, SKgov could concurrently show Korean-peninsula leadership by informing NK that any future attack on equal or greater scale will be an unacceptable provocation and an unacceptable and offensive insult to all Koreans.

Let the two elements create an effective, near-term strategic counter-balance and crisis stabilization.

As an aside... while PRC is making big profits off this flare up in the spot Gold markets, it would help if they manned up and more proactively helped to parent a troubled, violent neighborhood juvenile, accordingly.

Respects and peace to the Korean peninsula-

Geo,

I think you take the post too literally. One would assume the post iterates that if F-35's were available right now, SK has yet to acquire them. Most intelligent people know this is not the case. Bare with the poster if you will.

Was just adding to the conjecture as this being a more versatile, arguably more effective, 'low-level' strategic retaliatory capability/deterrence to have available as an option. (that vs the hypothetical 10 of any fighter available instead, which could potentially be construed as a higher-end strategic capability in the first place, being held back for political reasons - thus reducing the flexibility and effective capabilities available in the tool box). Two Cents

And Cy, you're probably right... being too literal a response. Fair enough.

Respects-

Frankly, I'd rather see the NK army nuked than see hundreds of thousands or millions of SK citizens killed or made homeless. But maybe that's just me.
