PS- Don't we have a topic covering what the Raptor can/can't do for top end?
Probably a dozen of them. And it ain't Mach 1.8. |

I think it's between Mach 2 and 3 at altitude. What it exactly is, is anyone's guess.
I've read figures like 2.25, 2.42 and even calculations of Mach 2.80 by a dude claiming to be an engineer who worked on the F-22 in the mid 90's. He never provided any proof of this and what's also weird is that he got removed (Along with all his posts) after posting some interesting/sensitive data about the Raptor.
1 Thing is sure, the Raptor is fast enough for it's role.
What's way more important is its super cruise capability combined with its stealth characteristics IMO.
I'd rather fly at M1.7 for a long period of time while being undetected, with still plenty of fuel left to complete my mission and RTB than to do M2.5 for a short amount of time, greatly reducing my stealth and expending 80% of my fuel in the process.

| If subsequent flights do not appear likely (like when your enemy is at your six) there are no limits. |

The 2.42 figure came from Paul Metz's comment that it could do better than 1600 mph ( 1600 mph being Mach 2.42 at altitude). |

| Several operational Raptor pilots have said in interviews that they're operationally limited to M2.0. That being said, as it was pointed out above, in comat all bets are off if the pilot needs it. |

Probably like the F-104, F-111, and B-58 (and others). More speed is there if you need it but if you use it everyday it'll eat into airframe hours. |

| Anyone have a copy of that photo of the F-22's nose where it seems like part of the coating has been singed off? WOW! |
