Please forgive me if this has been asked before as you can't search by picture. I was looking over the Vipers at Miramar today and I couldn't figure out what this part is. Please help me!

It's often refered to as the missle light, or tail light. It is the rear formation light, and the version you are looking at in this picture has been modified for CCIP/NVIS. It works on a blinking pattern at the same interval as the wing tips and inlet lights and is controlled by the external lighting panel in the cockpit.

On the unmodified ones it is white. On the newly modified ones, it has a green look to it, but it's very bright so could be confused with white. The lens is coated, but clear so it could be confused with other colors.

Wow! Talk about quick! Thanks guys Very Happy ! IDCrewDawg, I noticed the coatings - they cause a strange red/green color in the reflected light. Can you tell me why they're there? Is it some sort of filtering to produce a certain wavelength of light or to help with the brightness of the light transmitted through the lens?

I don't know why the hue is there, I do know the bulbs are white normal lights, and the lens causes the color though. When you look at the picture you see an oval shaped hole directly above the light. That is the IR portion of the light and is what is used for formation flying during NVIS missions. These are on or near each external formation light.

no problem. I enjoy playing name that part with newer crew chiefs. I once identified a part to a lube gun we use. It was found during one of our FOD walks, when asked what it was I let them know and they didn't believe me untill they went to look at the equipment.

Laughing I'm glad you enjoy it! I may have some more mystery parts after tomorrow, especially if the F-16 crews are still lounging in the beer garden (just an unconfirmed suspicion about their chosen activities for today Wink ). One other question about this system - can you turn on just the IR portion independently of the visible light?

falcon-watcher, Thanks Very Happy ! I'm going to have to look at all those formation lights a bit closer to see which ones have the IR tomorrow!

They all have IR, and yes you can turn on only the IR part independently. It's a switch in the cockpit. The pencil light on the forward part of the vertical stab is not a formation light so it doesn't have IR. It only functions as a part or the IFR system. The bottom wing tip lights are not associated with IR either.

Very cool! I think the CCs should like that - LEDs don't burn out so they shouldn't have to mess with them as often Cool . You know, the great response I get on this site never fails to amaze me!
