"'It's sad to see an F-16 destroyed like this,' said Maj. Wayne Chitmon, 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron"

'Holy' never said truer words.

I used to fly this jet as an IP in the 310 TFTS in the mid-80s. It raced around at 550 KIAS at 500' AGL over the desert. It kicked F-15 butt in BFM up in the cold clear air at 30K feet. It led 4-ship flights up initial at airbases all over the country. Now it's a bunch of wreckage in the hot and muddy swamps of Florida, destroyed by engineers who probably have no idea how much that beautiful aircraft meant to us.

Yeah, it's sad....

Sad true, but for a good cause. Improving the AIM120, AIM-9X, and proving new OFPs work or don't work needs to be done. Reading a history of engagements during Vietnam shows the "testing" of Sparrows, Sidewinders, and Falcons was a joke that lead to missed kill opportunities and dead US crews. Realistic testing against a 4th generation threat will help prevent that from happening again.

In the US Air force you blow up 78-models for fun. In Norway we put them together and fly them. I don't know who is more crazy. Shrug

If Eglin was going to trash a bird for the test, I wonder why they didn't use 83-1169. It's been sitting at the range doing nothing for years, ever since the birdstrike and engine fire at Duke Field.

http://www.f-16.net/aircraft-database/F ... file/1499/

However, yeah it may suck to see it go out this way, but it is for a good cause. I want to know that the system works. One, so we can have a viable FSAT, and two, so that when it comes time to destroy an uncontrollable drone, the bird doesn't fly back towards Panama City or Tampa and put people at risk.

Slicing the bird in half with an AIM-9 warhead will ensure termination of flight, and that is exactly what they showed here.
