I just saw this photo of an SU-35 and due to the angle of the shot you can see a really messy irregular surface on the tail and wings?

Are the panels for these things created by hand?

I have no idea but the Pakistani maintenance guys I worked with decades ago were amazed that we tracked the panels that were removed during maintenance/training. They said that on their Chinese built MiGs that wasn't necessary as the panels would only fit one airframe. They were also amazed at how smooth the rivet lines were on the Vipers.

Overstressing an airframe during violent maneuvering can cause that to happen to metal panels, correct? My dad told me about that happening to a few of the F-86s he used to work on way back when. I would think that it could still happen to control surfaces and such not made of composites I would imagine. G forces wreak havoc with stuff!

P.S.: Don't shoot me if I am wrong- I'm just making an educated guess with the information at hand!

Take a look at any Russian built airplane and you will see a relatively crude product, not up to western standards of fit and finish. However, they are much cheaper to build that way and don't seem to suffer a great deal in performance, at least in the short term.

Seen an A-10 land short of the active at McChord back in the day … all the rocks that the mains kicked up dinged the flaps and empennage pretty good.

In Western terms … if you signed off a BPO/PR with dings like that on a jet? Your going to jail!

Look at how wrinkled the sides of a B-52 are when sitting on the ground.

That slack is built in on purpose. When the wings are at flight level (no longer sagging) the skin pulls tight. That along with the cabin pressurization takes out most of the wrinkles. If you look at pictures of new build B-52's you'll still see the wrinkles.

As for the Su-35, I'm sure with a design that's been in production now for near 30 years, the empanage is not built by hand.
