Hi,
Does anyone know which F-16B has been preserved at the entrance to the ANG facility at Peoria, IL please? It is marked 82-1042 but is a false serial.
Regards and thanks

| Commemorative or a rebulid? According to the database: "(aircraft 82-1042 )Crashed at Peoria, Illinois due to a mid-air collision with F-16A (82-0916) during a training sortie. The F-16A came up from below and impacted the F-16B. The crew ejected with only minor injuries while the F-16A landed safely" |

I suspect it is a different jet painted up to look like 82-1042?

| Sounds like they chose 82-1042 to honor someone of the two crew who ejected safely - did that person move up the ranks to be a squadron commander or base commander? Or they wanted to cover up a jet's serial number to mask its possible loan to another foreign country before being returned to the USAF for retirement. |

I'm sure it is painted to represent the aircraft that crashed. The question though is which airframe has been used?
Regards and thanks

Actually, the base commander at the time (Col. Rezac) was one of the pilots involved with the mid-air. He eventually became a BrigGen. One of the fellows in the B model was LtCol Konie, and he eventually became OS commander.
I know a lot of the old 16 pilots at Peoria, I will ask them and see if any of them know what the original serial was. |

With thanks to the PAO at Peoria, this aircraft is confirmed as 79-0420, an ex Sheppard AFB TTC airframe.
