OK, here' what this jet is doing, i'm at a complete loss..Block 30 has fried 3 dessc's in the last few days, something is causing the dessc to short out. when it does 2 things happen 1. the dessc download detects an air start which isent the case. 2.. even more confusing, as soon as acft power is applied and the batt switch is placed in main..the jfs doors open and the jfs ignitor starts firing..this happens with out placing the switch to start1 or start 2. all wiring has shot good as of now we shot the whole system, r2 start panel, k2 relay, k9 relay, r2 dessc x3, and repaired some wires on the dessc cannonplug and are now looking at the left wow and jfs matrix. on 2 of the fried dessc's they shorted out so bad we could not download any info at all out of them. I have 14 years exp. on this jet and am pretty good with the start system. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Is your AFETS involved? If not, you should get them out to work the jet with you. If you can't resolve the problem, AFETS can document it and submit an FSR to Lockheed for more help.

I personally smell a rat in the DESSC connector, interesting that you had to repair some wires.

Best Regards,

What kind of mx has been done in the week prior to this problem is where I would start. Probably some damn Avionics troop left something disconectted or rewired a cannon plug for you! Sorry Joe, I know you are Avionics;) Shrug

We do mhave afets in the loop and they helped us shoot wires all day yesterday and we couldent find anything. And other than an FCR issue there was no major mx done prior to us having this problem.

HEY!!! easy on the "pointy heads".... Very Happy Shocked Very Happy

It does sound like a cannon plug might have gotten put on "cock-eyed" and some pins got could have gotten bent over and are shorting out the dessc...

Most AFETS are good help but not even close to being electricians!! There you go, Avionics working FCR prior to... Damn its nice getting back on here even though I'm at AFCannonstan again on 130's!

I have seen this problem recently, was something like the jfs door relay stuck open. frying dessc's and auto start when main power applied.

Sounds like it could be a bad diode allowing power to move where it shouldn't from a source that is powered. Only seen it a few times but it can cause problems like this.

BTW, when you get it fixed, PLEASE post the findings. The suspense is killing me.

Well not sure if it is fixed or not we will wait till monday to get approval to throw a new dessc in(this jet has already fried three and we are micap for 3)but today we found stray voltage in the wire going to pin 5 on the start panel cannonplug, upon further investigation this only happened when there was a vibe on the wire harness, pulled back the panty hose and 6 inches in there was bare wires touching, we also found pin 5 on the dessc cannonplug a little recessed. So we are going to sell that as the fix, amazing how it took us 4 days to find it and the wires shot good every day except today. Will let ya know mon if we are fmc or micap for a 4th dessc.

Yea! Fingers crossed here.
The built-in test and self-test for the F-16 was supposed to find something like 95% of the problems (with avionics). What I have discovered is that means 95% of your time will be spent looking for the other 5%!
