I was wondering, which "Fox" call is used for which weapon? I'm almost sure that Fox 2 is used for a heat seeking missile shot (ie: AIM-9), but I don't know about the others. I read a list in another part of this site which listed Fox 1 being used for a Sparrow shot, while Fox 4 is listed as notification of an AMRAAM shot. I'm just a bit confused, because I've read a lot of stuff over the years and I've seen different calls being used for different weapons. Is there a difference between squadrons or air forces? I'd think not, especially since they may have to cooperate at some point and differences could cause confusion, but I'm just a civilian. Also, are there a specific calls for release of other weapons, such as LGB, JDAM, Maverick, Harpoon (or other anti-shipping missile), HARM, or others?

Also, does anyone know if there's a similar system in the Russian or other foreign air force? I'm just curious as we don't have major plans for cooperation with them that I know of and they still have a very different way of operating than the US and NATO.

Sometimes 'Fox Three' was used for a guns shot, but that's old, old, old - earth was still cooling, and Gums was wondering what that bright doofer was up in the sky at night ........

bix, good point! IIRC, some F-16 pilots were contemplating that option on 9-11 due to a lack of air to air weapons. THANK GOD it didn't come to that!

Lack of weapons? Forgetting the cannon? F-15 or F-16 would be able to remove engines, one at a time, on a commercial aircraft. It's not going to out-turn them!?

Bix, I apologize for not being clear enough. I have read that some of the F-16s launched that day with no missiles and no ammunition for the cannon, and that others launched only with ball ammunition (instead of HE) for the cannon. From what I've read, the F-16's cannon is more like a shotgun, not a laserbeam. I've read that some of the pilots who launched with ball ammunition considered using it on the wing or the cockpit area, but it would be much less effective than normal combat ammunition. If some of those pilots really did launch without any ammo or any missiles, they would have had to use the F-16 itself to stop any terrorists in control of an airliner. I'm glad no F-16 pilot had to make that decision.

Lets just say our jets were ready to carry out The President's order that morning when they took off at 10[Link pending approval] Good thing all the hijacked aircraft were down by 10:10. Would have been a very terrible thing for a Viper Pilot to do.

Even though there is speculation/rumor that our jets may have downed a hijacked jet, the times just don't jive. I can verify that.
