| Anybody know of this pdf from 2002 IIRC calling for 762 F-22s to cover all contingenies? |

| Cover all contingencies? I think the number was to replace most of the aging fighter airframes that are now falling apart. |

762 F-22s.
Yet the USAF couldn't get 500. Or 380.

As far as I know 762 was the planned number during the ATF DEM/VAL phase in the late 80's. This was reduced in the early 90's.

As with the B-2 (early procurement - 132), the F-22 is so good we only need a relative few, to accomplish our mission requirement. These are the Rambo's of all AC, being superior on so many levels that we dare not have to many. So in an effort to not be looked on as arrogant, the US has decided to share with the world the F-35, forsaking all others, for the sake of commonality and costs.
All good reasons, and not bashing the F-35 too much, but so far the F-22 looks to be the superior airframe. While legacy AC slowly deteriorate and become obsolescent, we will have far fewer replacement AC for re-capitalization and fewer AC options. In hopes that our far more advanced AC live up to their promises, are not overwhelmed by less superior AC and a worthy opponent does not present itself.
Do not be surprised to see the F-35 numbers slashed in favor of the UCAV's, as the F-22 was in favor of the F-35. Savor our manned AC programs because over time there will be less and less use for them, with unmanned AC, cyber warfare, missiles, lasers and urban warfare dominating budgets.
I love AC of all types, foremost fighter AC and they will be around at the air-shows for a long time to come. There is a darker side too and my wish is that we will not have to use them, knowing full well that others will try to exploit weakness to their advantage and evil will raise it's ugly head.
