| Could be. Looks like he was cruising at 25,000 in an unpressurized Mooney. |

Looks like the Blacksnakes got to chase an airplane around today?
Granted the aircraft did crash in Indiana, and the Blacksnakes do still have Vipers, but "reportedly took off from a small airport near Grand Rapids, Michigan"
Would we want to guess the Badgers or the Stingers? They're closest, or maybe the Bulldogs? I think the media is 'assuming' again. The Blacksnakes aren't even on the map!?!

Just thoughts
More importantly this is the second crash of this type, 'consistent with hypoxia,' in the last 2 months!?!

| Probably depends on where they intercepted him. He departed Grand Rapids, went north to Traverse City VOR, and turned south back to Grand Rapids and just kept going. You can see it here: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N400DE |

"How close did jets come to shooting down out-of-control plane?"
By DOUGLAS WALKER • and KEITH ROYSDON • October 2, 2009
MUNCIE -- The F-16 military jets that were tailing a single-engine plane Wednesday before it crashed in a Randolph County corn field were prepared, if necessary, to shoot the aircraft out of the East Central Indiana sky.
http://www.thestarpress.com/apps/pbcs.d ... 0991001027
Four F-16s were scrambled about the time the plane reached northeast Indiana, he said. Only two fighters flew with the plane at a time. *He would not say where they were based.* NORAD closely watched the plane to determine whether it was likely to crash in a populated area, Kucharek said.
Andrew Todd Fox, the chief National Safety Transportation Board investigator for the crash, said the probe was focusing on the plane's oxygen system, which was largely destroyed in the fire that followed the crash. *The M20M Mooney isn't pressurized but is capable of flying at altitudes of 20,000 feet or more where oxygen is required.* |

"Preliminary report made on plane crash
NTSB investigates accident after aircraft left York"
Published: Wednesday, November 11, 2009 12:05 AM CST
By Melanie Wilkinson
YORK — The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its preliminary report regarding a fatal airplane crash that occurred after it took off from the York Municipal Airport.
William Huff, the 61-year-old pilot from Indiana, left the local airport on Friday, Aug. 14. His destination was Eagle Creek Airpark near Indianapolis, Ind., but the plane few on for more than 300 miles before crashing near Ravenswood, W. Va.
The Ohio Air National Guard launched F-16 Fighting Falcon jets in pursuit of Huff’s airplane, but the Air Force pilots were unable to gain his attention visually or by radio. They noted that “the pilot appeared unconscious at the flight controls.” The Air Force jets remained with the airplane until it departed controlled flight and descended into the heavily wooded terrain below. |

PS - Anyone hear what ANG ASA Base the F-16s "truly" flew from?
Ravenswood is close to Jackson County Airport in Millwood and the only OHANG Viper unit relatively close to the vector between there and York NE is Springfield. But that's not sayin' Toledo couldn't have gotten to him also. Just me speculating. Don't believe Springfield has an ASA tasking unless some other ASA unit has a Det. there.
