Greetings... I felt like I might as well post here since you guys seemed to be fairly squared away when it comes to setting people straight and giving pretty good advice, from the number of threads I've read on the subject.

FWIW, I'm applying for OTS and I'm hoping to get into UPT (isn't everyone?), so I can fly jets. I'll be honest in saying that I think my chances of actually managing this are slim to none (but that applies to the vast majority of applicants, does it not?). I just took the AFOQT yesterday and felt it was really easy, except I accidentally skipped a question on the counting blocks section and had to waste a good minute of the precious three minutes you get to do that section fixing my mistake; I probably could have finished the section in that time. Oh well; at least I got halfway through before I started filling them in at random. And I think I got about halfway through table reading...that is one difficult section, but I'm pretty sure you're not intended to finish that section since even the AFA graduate taking the test didn't finish it.

Anyway...
I guess I might as well ask you guys for an estimation of my chances for a slot, or even getting into OTS based on my 'stats.'

GPA-2.66 (yes, it's bad...but I never studied...yes, I know that's bad. But my attitude has changed pretty significantly since then)
Major-Business Admin (...in hindsight not what I should have gone for)
ASVAB AFQT - 98 (as for the rest of the scores, I know that I qualify for every job in the Army...)
Vision - 20/15 with contacts but I have an astigmatism, and last time I checked 20/40-50 uncorrected...wondering if that will be a problem.
Flight hours - 0 (...I should probably get around to fixing that) let's just say I'm kind of an armchair pilot (lots and lots of sims since I was 13 or so... but I've been out of them for the last couple of years, until recently)
Other- I speak fluent Japanese and play tennis... also good at all things mechanical / automotive.

My god, this bug with the text flying around is really annoying...makes it really hard to type when you can't see what you're typing.

Oh yeah; for the sake of argument let's assume I get 95's across the board on my AFOQT... since that's what I'm hoping for.

I would say probley not that great my friedn is in texas flying t-38 and going on to Luke to fly 16's and a former crew chief on the 16 and busted his A$$ with a 4.0 in collage and scored high and bearly got his slot. so if that helps. But then again I'm not a Pilot. and never cared to be one.

you can fly a fighter with contactlenses? why didn't anyone tell me that 10 years ago? I would be flying a real falcon onstead of a [Link pending approval] oh no, I'm 6 foot three, I'd have my knees to my shoulders and my head against the canopy, I [Link pending approval] Smile

Well I'm fairly sure you can :p

Although, the standards for vision now are much more lax than they were 20+ years ago. Used to be you had to have 20/20 to fly for the Navy, now it's only 20/40 corrected.

Although I think the limit for pilot height is something like 6'5? And you can't be over 6'7" or so to even be in the military.

The thing that matters is seated height though.

Definitely get some flying hours if at all possible. A little community service and leadership experience would be a good idea too. If you're good with languages, learn some arabic, couldn't hurt. If you're young enough, and you don't get in in the first round, maybe enlist in a nearby unit, because that will only help your chances. But there are no guarantees. As to your chances, well, you'll never know until you start applying.

If you're not too stuck on F-16's, check out the army national guard. Supposedly it is somewhat less competitive; they don't even require a college degree. There are some downsides, but flying apaches or even their fixed-wing transports is way cooler than flying Cessna 152's or nothing at all.

My PCSM is 93... four more hours and I get a 94. Another 100 and it's 97. LOL.
