first I want to see everyone's opinion of this bird but what I really want to get down to is the modifications it will receive in 2010. I heard things about an AESA radar, more powerful engines, and when does it get equipped with METEOR?

My opinion of the Rafale hasn't changed in that it's an impressive and highly capable strike fighter. The design is beautiful in that it is twin-engined, the blending of the canard/intake area with the forward fuselage chine/cheek design (a la TF-102A Delta Dagger) and yet remains a small aircraft. I personally like the cockpit layout and design (sidestick and big situational display in the center like a scope). All feedback I've heard indicates the Rafale is a nimble dogfighter with good nose authority.

The question about the upgrades planned for it and when will they be implemented is unknown except to Armee de l'Air, Dassault and French Defense Ministry officials.

First AESA assets will be delivered by 2010 for OPEVAL and are due to be introduced from 2012 with batch 4 Rafales. AFAIK 2 aircraft were ordered ahead of the larger order planned today. Batch 4 aircraft will feature the improved OSF-IT TV camera, but lack an IR component. Other improvements include a new MAWS (DDM NG) and Meteor is scheduled for introduction by 2018 with the french forces. The stronger engine is not planned to be introduced by the AdA or MN any time soon, but it seems to be an requirement for the UAE and might be part of the deal. SNECMA already conducted quite some work in advance since many years.

There are reports in swedish media today that Brazil have selected to move on to negotiate a deal to buy the Rafaele. Perhaps that might help the french to afford the upgrades.

That was a little premature as the Brazilian AF has not finished evaluating the AC.

Quote:
RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's stated plans to award a multi-billion-dollar fighter jet contract to France ran into turbulence on Wednesday amid pressure from rival bidders and Brazil's air force.

The selection process "has not yet finished," Defense Minister Nelson Jobim said in a statement late Tuesday.

Brazil "will continue with negotiations with the three participants; they will be followed up and the proposals potentially reshaped," he said.

That position ran counter to official statements by Lula and his government on Monday -- during Brazil's Independence Day attended by French President Nicolas Sarkozy -- to the effect that the deal had all but sealed in favor of France's Rafale jets made by Dassault.

"President Lula has announced the decision by the Brazilian side to begin negotiations with the GIE Rafale to acquire 36 Rafale combat aircraft," Lula and Sarkozy said in a joint statement on that day.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim specified that the decision to extend the talks with Dassault "was not adopted in relation to the other two" bidders, Boeing of the United States and Saab of Sweden.

A Rafale spokesman at the time told AFP that "President Lula's declaration clearly means that the Rafale has won the competition."

But Brazil's air force, which had not yet submitted its painstakingly detailed analysis of all three contenders to Lula, objected to being sidelined, analysts said.

"I think our president got a bit ahead of himself," said one Brazilian military analyst, Alvaro Pinheiro.

"The problem is that the final report (by the air force) was to be submitted at the end of October," he said.

Nelson During, a respected Brazilian military expert, agreed.

"The military is complaining that this leaves it little room to negotiate the two contracts: the aviation system (the jets) and the weapons systems (missiles and bombs)," he said.

"The two president have created some confusion and now we're going to see what the military wanted to avoid at all cost: a debate in the media between lobbies and interest groups."

By plumping for the Rafale jets before the tender procedure was complete, Lula was short-circuiting the Brazilian congress's defense committee, to the fury of party leaders, he explained. Jobim's backtracking was to placate them.

Nevertheless, he said, because it appeared that a political deal had been struck directly between Lula and Sarkozy, "it is very difficult to reverse this."

Boeing, which was offering its F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter, and Saab, talking up its Gripen NG aircraft, both emphasized that they had not been notified that the Brazilian tender had been settled in favor of Dassault.

The US government, which authorized the export sale of the F/A-18, said in a statement through its embassy in Brazil: "We understand that a final decision has not yet been made regarding the winner of the contract."

The F/A-18, in its opinion, "is the best in comparison to its competitors," it said.

It also objected to Lula's explanation that he preferred the Rafale because of France's offer to share all the technology that goes into the jet so Brazil could one day build its own fighters.

Approval by the US Congress "means that (the) US government?s approval of the transfer to Brazil of the advanced technologies associated with the US government?s offer of the F/A-18 Super Hornet is final," it said.

"The United States welcomes the opportunity to enter into open negotiations," the statement said.

Saab's team in Brazil was still digesting the developments and would issue a media statement later, a spokeswoman, Bruna Dias, told AFP.

Asked whether there was confusion in the Swedish company over the different messages from Brazil's government, she replied "yes."

Dias added "we haven't had anything" in the way of official contact from Brazil's government about whether the fighter tender was closed or negotiations were continuing.

The contract to supply Brazil's air force with fighters it will use for the next three decades is worth an estimated four billion to seven billion dollars, making it one of the biggest defense tenders in the world.

Brazil already has close military ties with France, having bought a second-hand aircraft carrier from it in 2000 and last December striking a 10-billion-dollar deal to buy five submarines and 50 helicopters.

Lula's government has emphasized since the fighter jet tender was launched early 2008 that the priority was technology transfer, so Brazil could become a sophisticated industrial power in its own right and have the means to protect its vast natural resources.

Nothing substantial on the brazilian deal as fas as I know.

On a more serious note there are reports two Rafeles crashed after taking of from the Charles de Gaulle last night. Last I heard one pilot was picked up safely and the other was missing. Some reports claimed they had crashed into one another. Suppose we´ll get more info over the next few days. Just hope the other guy is alright too.

RAFALE has won in BRAZIL..The official announcement is just a formality..Rafale with AESA and 9 tons engines M88-3 would be serious threat to any fighter including F-35 and RAPTOR.

If they let the Rafale get into visual range maybe. Otherwise its a fireball before it had a clue anybody was out there. AESA doesn't detect stealth aircraft.

Well ,you know as well as I do, there is no such thing as 100% stealth aircraft . Its a fallacy..

I recall the incident happened few years ago when a Typhoon with its Captor radar had a Raptor on the screen !! Rafale today is probably the best all round ,versatile fighter in the world and even without AESA not to be underestimated by anyone . It has done pretty well against F-22 lately losing only one out of seven engagements.

Sources for this alleged incident? As far as doing well against the F-22...I take this with a major grain of salt. Rolling Eyes

M88-3 and AESA should be an excellent modernization. Respects due to the Rafale program.

But guys, let's try to relax about the Rafale vs F-22 thing (totally ideologically motivated and mere B.S. posturing).

Rafale, Gripen NG and Super blk II were in contention to replace Mirage 2000 aircraft (and expand on it, sure). Brazil simply needs a modernized tactical system to counter-balance Su-30xx class aircraft in the region, if anything. A rather unfortunate and unnecessary regional arms-race underway, imho, but thats for another forum.

This happened during the last Dubai Air Show where The Rafale defeated Typhoon by 4:0 of course I am not saying Rafale is in the same class as Raptor and these mock fights between friendly airforces dont mean much but she will be pretty close once she has an AESA and the METEOR.
Many French pilots have been qualified to fly from US carriers as well as the Charles De Gaulle, and the Aeronavale was engaged in attack operations over Afghanistan The US SH pilots were extremely impressed with the Rafales Flight Control System, which gives better carrier landing performance than any other aircraft. The USAF was also extremely impressed with the accuracy of the Rafales A2G strikes in Afghanistan and Nellis Air Force Base. Rafale is optimized for low-altitude flight in keeping with its low-level attack mission and carrier requirements. Its high-altitude performance is similar to that of the SH but its overall A2A performance,is much better then the SH especially in WVR type of engagements.Over Afghanistan Rafales have operated in tandem with Super Etendards and Mirage 2000s in using LGBs without any reduction in effectiveness.
