What are the requirements to be a pilot in the air force? Do the requirements change from plane to plane, or are they all the same?

Thanks

For the most part, to become a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force, your chances are by far the best if you're a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. Most USAF fighter pilots are Academy grads as far as I've been able to determine.

Getting an Academy appointment is tough. You've really got to prove yourself to get in.

My nephew averaged a 3.98 GPA through high school, was the star of the swim team, (set state records), was an Eagle Scout, did a lot of community service, and STILL didn't get selected for the AF Academy, West Point, OR the Naval Academy. That tells you how TOUGH the competition is! (He will be reapplying, after he finishes his mission for his church...Mormon...which is a very good religion as far as the service academy boards are concerned because Mormons strongly believe in patriotism and service to the country.)

But if you want to fly the best, you've got to prove yourself to be one of the best. Dive in there and give it everything you've got or can get.

The Academies are tough to get into - they only want the best.

cmjohnson, I wish your nephew good luck on his mission and with his subsequent re-application to the Academy!

Another factor that will help:

About ten percent of AF Academy acceptees are in the Civil Air Patrol. Join and it slightly improves your chances.

Yes, I am in the Mustang Cadet Squadron (14), and a lot of older seniors I know, who once attended the Academies, were in this squadron as a kid. I enjoy it. We do everything the almost exactly the same as the AF (marching, drill, guard, etc.), and it gives you in a way a sense of military ways. Ranks, tests, uniform inspection, it's a real good way to get involved. We do all kind of search & rescue missions, aerospace class, glider flights, powered flights, and even get your license if you choose. If you want to know more, email me or send me a pm. Civil Air Patrol is excellent!
