Congratulations LM for this deal with Egypt for more Vipers … funny how all the talk on this site is about 5th generation fighters!

http://www.f-16.net/news_article3496.html

Sure, it’s nice to have a modern $1, 500 driver (5th generation fighter) in your golf bag but your old a$$ $20 irons (F-16’s) are doing all the work!

Time for a split … F-22/35.net should have its own site.

Vipers rule until they are all grazing grass in Tucson!

Of course Vipers still sell like hotcakes! I keep saying that I believe we should upgrade Vipers and Eagles and buy more off the production lines....would save billions and billions and they still challenge anything out there for years to come with added upgrading. Problem with the Lightning and Raptor is that there's no real need for them. Nothing out there today or in the coming years cannot still be handled by Vipers and Eagles. Keep what Raptors we got and kick in the production lines on the Vipers and Eagles again for the U.S.

I know the Lightning and Raptor are superior and amazing in what they do. They are some serious machines but honestly we don't need them at this time. Everything now and in coming years could still be handled by fresh airframes of F-16s and F-15s.

You can only upgrade a platform so much. How do you think an upgraded Viper or eagle would fare against a modern IADS (e.g. S300 system)?

Ahhh … pretty good after Reapers and Predators take on the SEAD mission.
You see, technology is out there to make one UAV look like something that it’s not.
Vipers and Eagles and Hornets … oh my!
They will maintain air dominance and look for survivors IAW the Geneva Convention of Warfare rules!

Re: how well legacy platforms can/could perform against modern/future IADS?? Easy answer: It depends on how well you arm the modernized legacy platform with a modern/future stand-off counter-IADS munition (to augment 5th gen). Yes that takes some typical, regular investment, just as investment was put into true game-changing JDAMS a decade ago. It takes continuous vision and leadership in the defense planning side of things though, so no guarantees, agreed.

Re: VarkVet... great post. That post speaks for itself.

Re: the great irony about many pro-F-22 thinkers is that: while they deduce more F-22, more advanced F-16 and more UAS/UAV could better offset a seriously hunking F-35 overkill concept going forward... it's truly arguable that in fact: more F-16 fans are the ones actually saying NO to more F-16s and yes to the highly commercialized, simply-analyzed overkill F-35 scheme.

Your thoughts?

An interesting concept that I'd like to see in action.. at least at the Red Flag level to see if theory approaches reality.

F-16 looks cool with all that stuff hanging on it, but VERY draggy and unstealthy compared to a clean F-35 with all the stuff built in to it. I still love my viper though no matter what!! Still the sexiest jet in the world In Love

Crywolf32 … sweet shot of a modern Viper … If she isn’t configured to open a can of whoop a$$, nothing is.
The F-35 is ugly in the second picture …
BUT: you don’t know what she is carrying internally? Is it a she?
You know … like what you see on TV … might be a man-bitch … YUK!

Yeah about that F-35 photo. couldn't find any good head on shots of it. The F-35 is deffinately about function over form indeed.

Oops,

You'll need to add a couple Mikes and arguably bags too, under the wings of that F-35 to match more equally Cheers

Geo,

Considering F-35's internal fuel load and clean configuration, I would beg to differ somewhat. Granted the F-16 is carrying more fuel, but at the sacrafice of all that drag it can't help. Its biggest advantage in this configuration would be the AIM-9's, but that can also be carried by the F-35 without the other penalties (pods, tanks, bombs). The F-35 is simply cleaner aerodynamically, giving it great advantage. And the power/weight ratio only gets better as fuel is burned off. Cheers as well Cheers
