Swing and a miss there, Greek, oh so close, but still no cigar.
It's not even that, it's a VC-25A SAM-28000 or SAM-29000--and it's certainly not turquoise--I believe I've heard Columbia blue mentioned as the color used. The scheme for the VC-137s were picked out by Jackie Kennedy and the colors were kept and the scheme modified for the -25s.
But also remember there are things about those birds we don't know, and don't want to know, it would have been better considering that to forewarn the public about ten minutes beforehand that a big-@$$ed airplane is going to be buzzing Manhattan and it's fine, since there's a highly trained pilot at the controls and a fighter escort. therefore no need to act like Chicken Little or run around like a decapitated chicken.
I propose we make the chicken the official bird of the site.... |

Yep
Raymond Loewy was involved in the design of the scheme, the Kennedys picked out the colors. Loewy apparently designed the USCG "Racing Stripe" as well.

I dont think it would have been good to give everyone a heads up that Air Force One would be flying very low for a photo op. Every terrorist in northern america with a stinger would be on their way to NYC!!
Hmm thats interesting since the President normally gives visiting towns 24-48 hours heads up on when he's visiting. Dont you think every terrrorist with stingers would of tried shooting that plane in other towns and other cities? Give me a break! And remember the VC-25 has defensive systems to counter the stinger threat. |

The flyby was largely deemed as inappropriate and <a href="http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/28/obama-orders-review-of-ny-jet-flyover/?hp">an investigation is underway</a>.
With the nation keen-deep in two wars and our economy in a slump, what did USAF try to achieve via the photo-op? |

Same thing they do whenever they take pictures of their aircraft or fly them at public gatherings; Public Affairs, and recruitment...
Quote:
An Obama administration official has said the flyover was done because the White House Military Office wanted to update its file photo of the president's plane near the Statue of Liberty.
One must note the quote above does not say USAF or DoD, but "White House Military Office"
http://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/eop/whmo/
Hmmm... Guess the new administration didn't like the "file photo" of AF-1 flying above Mt Rushmore?
http://www.andrews.af.mil/shared/media/ ... 9G-023.jpg
Now I'll admit, there should have been some press releases and media attention given for the "event" many days prior to the flight. This would have further served to highlight the aircraft "visiting" a national landmark for a photo-fly-by.
Beagle; shall we cancel all military involvement in air shows and/or flybys at sporting events?
As a tax-payer, I do enjoy seeing all our military has to offer (specifically aviation technology) at air shows across the country or other public venues. (Even though they are getting fewer and further in between ) Many of us take great pride in what we do, and our equipment, and relish any chance that the public can appreciate what we do. (Peace-Time or otherwise...)
Like was said "with the nation keen-deep in two wars and our economy in a slump" the government and military can use all the good press it can get. This was simply poor planning, and improper communications which led to just the opposite, bad press.
Keep 'em flyin'

The amount of ignorance, ineptness and hypocrisy from the Obama administration is laughable and scary. It’s hard to believe Obama’s claim that he didn’t know where “Air Force One” was.
Lets see. We scold automotive manufacturers for wasting money and fuel taking relatively small biz jets back and forth to meetings; yet the fascist liberals squander taxpayer money and fuel “Air Force One” to have a dedicated photo shoot mission? Why couldn’t this photo shoot opportunity been done in transient on one of many of Obama’s trips to the area; rather than having a dedicated photo op mission?
The fascist liberals (and the liberal media) seemed to expect Bush to micromanage and have knowledge and take responsibility for everything that happened during his administration. So why isn’t the media and the liberals holding Obama and his administration to the same standard? Shouldn’t Obama and his administration realize that doing a surprise low-level pass near the former World Trade Center site would induce panic? It’s ignorant AND hypocritical.
The interview of the White House staff was pathetic and hilarious; it made Bush look like a professional and a genius. The Obama administration kept telling the reporters not to ask them, to ask the White House administration. Haha fascist liberals are so dumb and to used finger-pointing ( blaming) the White House administration; that they forgot that they are the White House administration.
I think it demonstrates how inept, out-of-control, thoughtless, and careless that this administration is. Taxpayer money being squandered to terrorize residents of New York City by the Obama administration. When they finally realized ex post facto how dumb their plan was; it seems they went on a witchhunt for a scapegoat. |

I totally agree with you CRASH - thanks for putting it so eloquently.
Now: this might be sick question, but...were the pictures at least good?
And where can we see them...?

Cigars, Yeah, I gots some good stogies around here, nothing fuels a good spurt of writing like a good La Palina parejo--just wish JFK would have been able to exempt Cuban cigars from the embargo, man I'd love to try one of those.
As for the VC-25s, every taxpayer "owns" it--we bought em after all...if they're going to go through with the Kestrel, we should all be allowed to fly in it once. |

It seems that Obama is trying to outdo Clinton. Clinton got a multimillion dollar “haircut” (that may have been a BJ from a prostitute that was fronting as a hairdresser) on AF-1. I think they shut down all air traffic within 50 miles while Clinton got about an hour long “haircut”. A lot of air traffic had to hold and be redirected.
When you add up all the lost business (and other expenses) from Obama’s Air Force One New York City photo shoot, it may very well be a billion-dollar photo.
Clinton gets some trim.

Haircut Grounded Clinton While the Price Took Off
By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN,
Published: Friday, May 21, 1993
It may have been the most expensive haircut in history.
Two of Los Angeles International Airport's four runways were shut down for nearly an hour on Tuesday, some incoming flights were delayed and Air Force One sat on the tarmac with engines running -- all so that President Clinton's Beverly Hills hairstylist, Chistophe, could come aboard and give Mr. Clinton a high-price trim before he took off for Washington.
Questions about Mr. Clinton's runway razor cut dominated the White House news briefing today, with the communications director, George Stephanopoulos, scrambling to explain why the populist President tied up one of the country's busiest airports to have his hair trimmed. Everybody Does It
Source and full story
http://www.nytimes.com/1993/05/21/us/ha ... &spon=
It's not the cost of the actual "haircut" itself that so outrageous, it's what it cost in fuel and what it cost the airline industry and other businesses that suffered because of the delays because of Clinton's "haircut". It's all so outrageous because Clinton was possibly getting more than his "haircut". Possibly Air Force One at taxpayer expense was used by the president as a brothel and at the expense of business because of redirected and delayed flights. |

I doubt anyone will ever see them... but then again "WE" paid for them, how about giving us all 8x10 glossies?
If the do come out; I'd look here: http://www.andrews.af.mil/photos/index. ... eryID=2052
It is where the previous file photos seem to be.

I KNOW - LETS PLAY "NATIONAL DEFICIT CHICKEN!!!"
RULES: While we're at war, politicians spend our $$$ on stupid $h!t like AF 1 Photo shots, million dollar haircuts, and other random things like changing out every single mailbox in Nevada so they match the ones in Idaho. Its no wonder that the economy has gone to sierra...

Aren't you forgetting one?
possibly the most important one:
New Presidents must say they will revamp the way America does business, but are under no such obligation to follow through the second they get enough electoral votes.
I say anyone that votes for the current schmuck the next go-round should be rounded up and sent down to Mexico City for swine flu research....just my opinion.

Just because you don't agree with the way something was done, according to the sensationalist news reports, doesn't mean the USAF was at fault or did anything wrong, especially, if NYC officials and the FAA were notified of the event. I know I always go fly events with huge airliners and fighter jets over the big cities (through controlled airspace) with out getting the proper paperwork done just to see if I can panic the citizenry.
Hanain island part II....really? Loose Canon of the day?? And by the way, the White House (spokesman) has been apologizing for a lot of stuff lately, stuff they had no control over. Wonder if the White House has apologized yet for the pilgrims at plymouth rock fiasco?
Sounds like your gunning from the hip there...cowboy- shoot first, get the facts later. |
