This isnt the first time nor the last times F-15 and F-16 jets have scrambled against "slow" movers! Hundred of intercepts have been done against aircraft like the Cessna either because they strayed into restricted airspace or they went "nordo" (no radio) and not responding to ATC, as well as your drug runners. There been a handful of well publiced intercepts so it gives some perception that this doesnt happen often but it does. ADF mission has been around long before 9-11 and will continue.

And for those of you who dont know this tidbit - when former G W Bush is at Crawford - the restricted no fly zone is in place and jets fly out of Fort Hood. One time the 391FS F-15Es out of Mountain Home had to do the mission as F-15Cs were grounded... and then F-15Cs all the way from Kadena Airbase Japan had also flown the Crawford No Fly.

But yeah that comment about stalling an F-16 by pulling high Gs in a Cessna - wohoo

Remember your actually dealing with more than just one intercepting jet!

For the same reason you don't go outside and fire guns off into the air on New Year's.

Say it with me: What goes up must come down.

That's right... those 20mm rounds have to come down somewhere; just think about all the outrage if one of them landed on a school bus or hit a daycare center, or someone's house, or what have you.

It wouldn't have mattered anyway. The bullets would have just richocheted off the 172's force-field and probably hit the Viper, giving the Cessna a kill.
But really, besides what gtg said, this guy wanted them to shoot him down so it wouldn't have changed anything. He probably wouldn't have even known, its not like he'd see tracers arcing past his plane. Complete lack of logic.

The chances of that happening are remote, given the flight path over some sparsely populated areas.

It would have been safe for the Viper pilots to fire warning bursts of 20mm at the Cessna over the open unpopulated forests.

Kid, this ain't "Grand Theft Auto" where you get points by being an idiot. In real life, professionals make grown up decisions that don't needlessly endanger the population they are trying to protect.
We don't need your help in accessing remote chances for injury or property damage.

Would you care to give us your name so we can pass it on to the DoD recruiting centers....just so they will pass on your application, if you ever decided to join up, 'cause I think you've got the wrong idea about what military service and flying are about.

An accidental 20mm burst HAS hit a school building in the past. It CAN happen. Luckily in that case they were target practice rounds and were not HEI/API. Saying "eh, the odds are low" isn't a workable excuse.

I heard he was washed out of Navy OCS by a D.I. that looked a lot like Louis Gossett Jr. and then he went to work for the airlines, which, in aviation, is similar to being dead.

So, if a C172/182 wanted to give a flight of F16s a hard time, what would frustrate the F16 pilots the most? I heard that the older radars were not so good with slow moving targets and a C172 can get down below 50kts. My guess is one of the two would be viewing from a vantage point while the other attempted the ID and intercept.
