Does anyone have any information on this bucket?
Based on what I'm looking at, I'd guess that it projects the HUD right into the retinas of the wearer, but I dont know enough to be sure. so my questions are:
1. What can it do HUD-wise?
2. Which planes will it be used on? (I'm thinking 5th gen and on) |

| I found a military contractor website that developed just such a technology. I asked if they are using it in the new helmet and got shut down pretty quick. I don't think you are going to get any details at this time. |

Looks like the mask Steve Buscemi's character wore in Con Air.
Irony: n. Bunch of idiots dancing on a plane to a song written by a band that died in a plane crash.
It'll probably be the same as the JHMCS: Whatever a pilot sees outside the aircraft, if he wants to kill it--as long as the missile tracks right, it's dead. They don't have to worry about having it inside the HUD screen. Something similar to this was on the History Channel special on either the F-22 or the F-35.
Since the pilot seems British, judging by the patch, I'd venture a guess that it's for either the EF-2000 or--simply because it looks so futuristic--the JSF.
Seriously, the thing looks like Darth Vader mated with a fly.
I think as long as people don't start saying it can display these items, can use these weapons, and has certain kill probabilities, we should be safe.
I know the Russians had this capability with the MiG-29 a while ago. I used to have MiG-29 Fulcrum by NovaLogic, and it said in the next few years (from the game which was made in the late 90s) the Russians would have it on their aircraft for the R-77 AAM, and sure enough, a few years later I saw a program where the USN sent some Hornets over in an exercise, I believe was called Red October, sure as can be, the Luftwaffe Fulcrums had the HMDs, and were pretty tough for the Hornet-drivers.
No, wait, I found where it's used, say hello to the new F-55 5.5gen fighter....gotta love the pace of progress in this day and age. |

It's an RAF F-35 test pilot wearing the jet's (prototype?) helmet. Shot in a way that let's ya see the pilot's eyes (which could also have been PhotoShopped in there, dunno). And yes...it puts all the HUD info on the visor. The F-35 will not have a traditional dash-mounted HUD.
Here's a buncha Google hits on it. |

Um... the patch on his jumpsuit is clearly the Joint Combat Aircraft program patch from the UK.
The Helmet is indeed the prototype JSF helmet. |

One of the main things it allows you to do it track aircraft that you have seen with radar, IR, etc. through your plane. Basically if you see an Su-27 on radar you get an indicator around where the aircraft is in your helmet with simple information like heading, speed, range, etc. If he were to fly under your aircraft, you could look down at the floor and the indicator would still be on him telling you exactly where he is. It helps improve tracking dramatically.
It will be on the F-35 (I believe the Eurofighter has its own toy), and the F-22 might be getting it as well. And of course the TIE Advanced (based off Vader's TIE in "A New Hope").
Added benefits, ability to use the Force, the voice of James Earl Jones, funny breathing, and a red lightsaber. |

The EF has a toy, but I don't know how much is out there--found one site that said it's pretty hush-hush right now:
