I was out at Anchorage today and noticed eight or nine MD-11s from FedEx. I thought (correct if wrong) their planes used GE CF-6s. Today, however, I noticed what looked like different engines on some of the planes. Some have that "cone" on the end of the exhaust nozzle and others are squared off. Now I am stumped as to whether these are newer versions of an old engine or indeed FedEx uses both types of motors.

Is there an easy way, without seeing a manufacturer's tag, to tell a CF-6 from say a P&W 4000?

While the majority of our MD-11s have the GE CF6, 19 of 'em do have Pratt engines. As for the visual ID, the exhaust cone differences are as good an indicator as any, AFAIK.
