I've never tanked off the hose and drogue but the basket thing looks like a piece of FOD to me. Plus, a boom is much faster.
In a viper, the receptacle is behind the cockpit, so when a viper goes 'up' as you put it, the boom will angle against the back of the canopy and may damage the boom, the canopy, or the AR receptacle. If you go up too much or too violently the boom will simply break as it designed to do. JP-8 is much like diesel in that it will burn but is in fact quite hard to ignite, so unless I put some PGU-28 through the side of the tanker, I can't think of too many scenarios that would result in an "Air Force One" type incident. But it was just a movie. |
