| The first time I saw a Dutch Viper with a drag chute was on an airshow in England in the late 90s. With a background from the RNoAF I only knew of our Vipers with the drag chutes. I asked one of the pilots if it was a late modification, which he confirmed. He also told me that it had been introduced for them to use it while practicing in Norway on icy runways. |

RNoAF F-16B block 15 #693 lands at Leknes Airport (68 deg 5 min north) using drag its chute in 1984/5. This was part of an exercise using one of Norway’s many rural civilian runways if the home base should be out of commission. The runway is only 800 meters, but that was not a problem using the chutes. After 2/3 of the runway they were able to drop the drag chutes and taxi in to the terminal building. Hi guys,
One of the other reasons for the dragchute is the less tension on the brakes
especially when they fly with the big bombs and have to return home.
The Pilot will use the dragchute also so the brakes won't get too hot so it prevents hot brakes.
I know that the RNLAF is in the progress of changing the brakes to the newest type so it will have less problems with the hotbrakes.

PS. the RNLAF uses both types of dragchutes.
mostly they use the american type when they are in the US or Canada and we fly with the french type at home. |

Henkster312, you said: "the RNLAF uses both types of dragchutes.

What is the diffenence between the French and the US types of drag chutes? Have any photos? |

Well, the difference is this,
The round ones are the US type and the chutes who look like a + are the french type.
The picture of the norwegian F-16 here in this forum shows a US type dragchute and if you see a picture of the J-016 when it is done with the demo you will see a french type chute in dutch national colors.
