I don't know if I'd fly in a Tupolev. They tried to start selling them in Europe but weren't allowed after their terrible safety record.

<Edit>

The Russian leaders fly in Il-96s--apparently, they're afraid too...but, still A.N. Tupolev was a great plane designer.

Yeah, some of the Tu's are great, at least their cargo haulers have work all over the place. Their airliners have a bad rap from what I hear so they kinda failed to get off the ground... take the pun as you please.

The problem isn't getting off the ground, it's staying off the ground once you are airborne....and not letting your 15 year-old kid fly the friggin airliner!

I branched this thread off from the "New Air Force One" thread, which can be found here:

http://www.f-16.net/f-16_forum_viewtopic-t-11653-postdays-0-postorder-asc-start-15.html

I felt like the topic was going too far off on a tangent. Let's stick with the facts on AF-1. If anyone wishes to discuss Russian airliner safety, they may do so here.

Good Call, TC I was going to suggest something like that in my next post to the other thread.

I had the "pleasure" of flying on them a couple of times, all I can say is that they are not the worst airline I have flown on, interesting but not the worst.

They're only bad when you let your 15-year old kid fly the airliner! <--Aeroflot 593 in 1994.

Are the landings at SVO as bad as I've heard, is it really almost like landing on gravel?

Never flew them internationally into or out of Sheremetyevo International, I flew them domestic into and out of Kremenchuk. No overhead luggage containers, 60's style net racks, "charming" stews and a country with a very weird time system.
