I have this scanned picture showing F-16D Block 40, 89-2178, having no WAR HUD or ASHM. Anyone know the story behind it? Did some Block 40s not leave the factory with the full cockpit?

I think I got this one.
If ya click on your link and look closely at where the AHSM mounts, you can just make out the indexers but not the hand grip that you would normally see there in other blocks. I can only assume the ASHM has been pulled for maintenance and not needed for whatever they were doin' on this sortie. The front seat HUD is your basic WAC unit. Which begs the question: "Why did they mount a WAC HUD in there?" The WAC and WAR HUDs could be mounted in the same fixture but I can't remember if ya needed a dedicated HUD EU for each type.
Subsequent images in the gallery show the same jet while at AV with the normal B40 HUD components. |

| AHSM might have been removed due to a foreign dignitary getting a FAM ride......But yes this jet has the AHSM mounted usually....i worked this HOG few times.... |
