| The F/A-37 is from the movie "Stealth". I've seen the movie. The aircraft is fake. |

Fake.
From an engine stand-point...
1. The intakes seem smaller than that of the Vipers (Which just feeds the F100-PW-229) You wouldn't get enough airflow to any engine to make that much power with small inlets.
2. Intake position is poor for high AOA flight. Ever notice fighter intakes are on the sides or bottom of most combat aircraft?
3. Cannon position directly ahead of intakes; Allows gun gas ingestion problems.
4. The "spare engine" shown in the movie doesn't look like it would fit in the length / height of the available fuselage. (Then again it looks as if most known engines wouldn't fit anyhow?)
Now if a "true engine" used Methane for fuel... (Cool methane rocket video)
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2007 ... firing.wmv
One catch though...
Methane has a flash point around -300*F (-187*C); for comparison the "special" fuel needed for the SR-71 Blackbird (JP7) had a flash point of 140*F (60*C) Now how do you keep methane under control in an aircraft traveling MACH 3+ when it begins to heat?

Don't worry yourself about it.
(Guess you didn't notice the chains holding the "full scale model" down to the flight deck while "attached" to the catapult?)
Look at it this way, aviation movies are kinda a bummer for some of us.
We know what REAL aircraft can and can't do...
F/A-37, F-35 (in Die Hard), Av-8B (in True Lies), F-14+F-5(Mig)(in Top Gun), F-16 (in Iron Eagle), VC-25 "Air Force One" (in Air Force One), F-117 (In Stealth 1990?)
Just among a few. There are countless aviation falsehoods in dozens of movies.
Yeah, try to find a copy of "Stealth" from 1990, now that was BAD. (But not as bad as Iron Eagle 2 & 3)

At least "True Lies" had a real missile shoot in it. |

Couldn't they have picked a number that didn't already exist on a real plane?

The FA-37 is real on my PC.
I fly it every night .. very short ranged at max burner and overspeeds so damn quick you break up at 2000kts.....
Quite funny to suddenly find yourself in space if you go vertical with burners for too long....
That and the game I have it in is Wings Over Vietnam... those Mig-17s don't stand a chance

The "swtichblade" type design is an interesting concept, yet I don't know how practical it is.
Looks cool though. Too bad the movie sucked. |

I'm betting that Muammar Qaddafi could tell you how practical the real "Switchblade" was. |

The first three screenshots, i could swear are of the Su-47 Berkut--I'm looking at my die-cast model right now and it looks darn close.

Not to nitpick, but so did Top Gun, and the post-production did such a good job the Navy opened an investigation into whether there were more than one Sidewinder launch. I know its a waste of money, but so is spending $250K on studying the mating habits of a dungbeetle in the Gobi Desert--yes the US did spend money on an insect that rolls around in $h1t. |

| I have no idea what this has to do with a Cold War Era aircraft, but such is the problem when we start to further divide the site into sections. I'll move this one to a more appropriate home. |

There are some notable differences between the aircraft in the screenshots and the Berkut. The F/A-37 has dorsally-mounted intakes, whereas the Su-47's intakes are more-or-less ventral. The F/A-37 has two forward-swept stabilizers that are variable in dihedral angle, whereas the Su-47 has four stabilizers (two vertical and two horizontal) that are rearward-swept and have constant dihedral. The F/A-37 has flat engine nozzles but the Su-47 has round nozzles. Most importantly, the wings on the F/A-37 are variable in geometry, whereas the Su-47's are fixed. |
