I have an idea to make searching for, and posting new topics about certain planes even easier. While we do have the "Other Military Aircraft" board, it is often filled with questions about other 5th Gen aircraft, despite there being a 5th Gen category, with boards for the Raptor and Lightning II.
My idea for a new category would be related to Cold War/Vietnam Era and Post Vietnam to Desert Storm Era aircraft. Many of our conversations involve The Century Series, Vietnam Era fighters and bombers, and the Teen Series of fighters. It would be great to see them all in one place, and make those conversations about flying and aircraft from 1962 to 1992 easier to find.
I know a lot of us who aren't "Spring Chickens" anymore (i.e., those of us who are still impressed by an F-15 Demo or an F-4 Heritage Flight ) would appreciate it immensely! |

| So far we have been tracking this thread in stealth mode... but yes looks like we better get to it and create those new categories. |

With this category, there would be no Super Bugs, but A-D model Hornets are fair game.
The whole idea behind this category would be to span from The Cold War (i.e., Cuban Missile Crisis), through Vietnam, and then Post-Vietnam to the end of Desert Storm.
Tomcats and Eagles are definitely a must for this one, but those two, the Hawg, Viper, and the A-D model Hornets would be the newest planes that would fit.
In other words, if the serial number doesn't start with 5X-, 6X-, 7X-, or 8X-, leave it at home, or an F-106 will shoot it with a Genie Rocket!
Thanks Lieven. You guys rock! |

YES! That's what I'm talking about Asif! BTW, we mean the BAC Lightning, there class, NOT the LM Lightning II.
Racer, the F-86 would be a little old for this topic, but we'll gladly talk Century Series jets!
So, I guess we should further clearify. If your jet's serial number is say, 57-XXXX to 89-XXXX, then it's fair game. No Warbirds, Korea, Gen 4 1/2, or Gen 5. Not that the fans on this site couldn't chat you up for hours about any of those, and definitely not that they aren't great planes in their own right...but they can stay in the "Other Military Aircraft" board.
Anyway, I was inspired by Col. C.R. Dick Anderegg's book "Sierra Hotel", and envisioned a board that would talk about those planes that many of us grew up around, and that some on this site were lucky enough to work around, and even fly.
Who wouldn't love to read more of Gums and Snake's war stories in the A-37, F-4, and A-7?...or read of Gums' exploits in the Voodoo? Also read about SixerViper, VarkVet, and Outlaw tell of the good ol' days in the birds of the 60s and 70s? That is the stuff this board should be made of! |

Don't count the Sabre out completely though - they served as operational ANG ground-attack fighters until late in 1970 when the last aircraft retired from the 'Boys from Syracuse', 174th TFW. They were also activated and deployed to West Germany during the 1961 Berlin Crisis. Can't get much more Cold War than that...
