This year is the 50th anniversary of the first flight of the Phantom. Anyone know if their are any airshows this year that will have a Phantom there....obviously it would be from another country but anything is better than nothing. I went to the 30th anniversary show at London, Ontario in 1988 and they had a row of 30 Phantoms plus a few others.........it was awesome!

A Greek RF-4C was at RIAT. The show got cancelled so can't get any pictures of it with its special paint scheme.

Ya gotta love the lines of those ol'rhinos.
Truly one the most beautiful things to fly(in an ugly kinda way)
(scratching my head) You know what I mean? |

There was nothing that seemed to get us going more in basic training at Lackland in 81 then when the F4's from Kelly AFB would fly over head. I'll always remember when the pilots would pull back on the throttle of those J79's and hear that whine...
Of course now the 16's fly over leaving memories for another generation of airmen.
Also no update on the rhinos in the field here in San Antonio, but will keep everyone updated... |

Try being stationed at George AFB in the late 80s with FIVE squadrons of F-4Es and Gs. F-4s on the ramp as far as the eye could see...lol. There were days when they were pushing sorties or doing exercises when all I wished for was the noise to stop because it would be J-79 double burner takeoffs every 30 seconds for hours it seemed.
I remember basic in 86 they had C-5s taking off over Lackland. All of the low flying loud straining whine to gain altitude and then our TI would say "don't you dare look up at it"...lol. |

Howdy!
I dropped in when I saw the old coalburners being discussed.
Just hopping in hoping to catch a rattle about where some poor misguided optomist might be viewed putting an F4 through it's paces.
I'm having trouble with the kid too, he says some of the Phantoms carried 22mm cannons, I think he's confused with the two pod phabulous phlyng phootlockers, I don't recall seeing any 22mm cannon on F4s at all. Ever. 20mm yes, 22? Special order for 22mm for Israel or whiskey tango foxtrot?
The kid rarely misses, but an internally mounted M61 Vulcan was what the F4E carried(other than sparrows and sidewinders), the rock chucker wasn't always on mark, but not as bad as the pod mounted cannons.
One wound up wet, one wound up dry and if Jesus loved you it'd stay in the sky. |

A couple of random things:
1. That has to be the ugliest F-15 I have ever seen in my life...
2. When I went through Basic, it was a combination of Vipers and Big Fred. My Basic flight had a combination of some real brain surgeons and rocket scientists, and one morning, Fred takes off, followed by a 4 ship of Vipers going in full blower from Kelly. My flight is standing on Hughes Street (the long troop walk) at attention, when Fred comes right over the top of my flight. As it is approaching, my TI said, "Don't be that first buttmunch I see looking up at this plane." Deductive logic can tell you where this story is going...
No sooner did he say it, when one of the more "intelligent" PhD.s in the formation looks straight up as the Galaxy flies directly overhead. His cause was not helped by the fact that he's about 6'2", so it was fairly obvious. This dumb@$$ now has like 5 TIs screaming at him, wondering aloud from under which rock his parents had found him. His job, from that moment forward (until he washed out), was after the TI would halt us at the sound of a jet, to break ranks, come to the front of the formation, point, and jump up and down, saying "LOOK BOSS! DE PLANE, DE PLANE!"
*********************************************
Anyway, just to update all interested folks. Yes, Tyndall and Holloman both still have about 3 QF-4s a piece that perform single ship demos, AND also fly with the USAF Heritage Flight.
Tyndall has sent one of its former airshow birds to Death Row. Not sure which one, but the Hill 2 painted bird was the first to hit the airshow circuit, so it would make sense that it was the first to go to Death Row. Since I'm no longer at Tyndall, nor around the fighter side of the house (unfortunately), I'm a little out of the loop.
Don't keep your hopes up for seeing the specially painted QFs for too many more years. IIRC, 2012 is supposedly when QF-16A/B ops start.
BTW, NAS Pt. Mugu sometimes sends their QF-4s to regional airshows, mainly West Coast stuff, if you are in the California area. |

!!! De PLANE!!!
I do love the QF-4s - it's nice to have something aside from the Raptor that can perform CPR by way of soundwaves acting on the heart and lungs |

I would've committed Lunch-Puku when I stepped off the crew bus.
As a "Good ol' boy" friend of mine would say, "That's uglier than a mud fence, with lizards dobbed on it!" |
